Blueg33 Junior has just acquired a bass guitar to add to his collection of guitars. He insists I must now buy him a bass amp because a bass guitar will "kill" his normal amps.

Surely this can't be right? I can understand that a bass amp would sound better (thats why my sound systems have a sub) but I would've thought that a normal bas guitar would work with any amp.

His favourite amp is a Fender Frontman 65R or maybe 657R (stylised script). I say he should use that, am I wrong?

A proper bass amp will 'sound' better and probably last longer, particularly at volume.
If it's just at home at practice volumes the guitar combo you have will be fine, if a little care is excercised, rehearsing with a band or gigs, he'll need a bass amp..

yeah they won't mix well.....seriously the best solution is moving away from amps at home and getting him set up with something like Guitar Rig and a half decent interface...the guitar modeling available now is as good as any amp, and way more versatile (not to mention cheaper and more 'volume-adjustable')

PS It took me about 10 years of denial and many thousands spent on amps to determine that computers now do it better...

stopmboxx, talk to me.

To stop p**sing the neighbours off I gave up using my Hartke cab and just play without being hooked up. But I haven't touched my bass in about 6 months now. frown

You can use an interface like this to plug into your computer.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...

I bought the very same thing off that particular seller and it turns out it's exactly the same as this Behringer interface.

Then as mentioned you need a program such as Amplitube or Guitar Rig to create the guitar sounds. I was dubious that the simulation would be poor but I was amazed. Though a decent pair of headphones you can practice silently but still get the sounds you'd associate with a cranked valve amp. I'm using Amplitube 3 and I honestly can't recommend it enough.

Just thinking about it now I don't think either of my Marshalls have been switched on for at least the last month. I'll give them an airing over the weekend and report back. biggrin

What amp(s) does he currently have?

Not sure what his other two are, they are cheap and cheerful and he doesn't use them at all

Well you'd need some kind of host package and then a plugin package specifically for bass...but it depends what you want to do really. You could buy Logic Pro 9 (I paid £200 off eBay) and in that you get really great modelling for bass and guitar, and you can record to your hearts content.

The only other thing you would need is a USB interface which connects your bass to your computer...these can be picked up cheaply, though as with most things the more you pay the more you get...I use an Apogee Duet, it's not cheap but does a great job. You'll need some speakers too, of course.

You could even get a specific bass modeling package like Studio Devil Virtual Bass Amp (http://www.studiodevil.com/products), there are loads of demo there so you can hear how it sounds.

I've got a Bad Cat Hot Cat guitar amp that's not been switched on since getting the gear i mentioned above. It's great...if you just want to jam quietly and still get a great tone it's easy.

Check out this vid...all bass and guitar is modeled with Logic Pro 9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_moHbO-h888
