Oh YES, wish I was there... biggrin
Saw them in 92 (?), they started with the complete Tarkus,
one of the most complex pieces of prog rock.
I think they aged well, even if E and P are suffering from carpal tunnel sysdrome
and L´s voice is not as powerful as 30 years ago,
but even at 70% boost they blow most of the competition away.

Funny that the german wiki entry is 3 times as long and much more detailed than the brit one,
here are some notes from Tarkus :
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarkus
in "Eruption" which has 230 BPM the rythm changes from 10/8 to 3/4 to 10/8 and 4/4,
all within 20 strokes.... nuts

Well, I thought the whole day was excellent. Got there in time to see the start of the UFO set, but they seemed to be having problems with fuses, so wandered off to watch Steve Hillage for a bit.

Then went back to the main stage for Bachman Turner who seem to have lost their Overdrive, but despite both looking like granddads, they certainly still know how to rock.

Then Joe Bonamassa, the highlight of the day for me. He is utterly superb. Can't say any more than that.

Downanoutz started off slowly, but then really got into it, recycling Mott stuff, which is what they are all about. Ian Hunter came on very late in the set, and only had time for two songs because they overran and the power was pulled. I think he was somewhat pissed off because he ran off the stage brandishing his guitar as though he was going to tt one of the promoters and had to be held back. No Young Dudes sadly!

ELP? Fantastically bombastic as you would expect. Keith attacked the organ with knives, Carl did his revolving drum kit solo and Greg seems to have eaten more than his fair share of pies over the years.

No major problems with getting away afterwards, plenty of food and drink during the day, so an excellent festival imho that subject to bill I would go to again if it runs next year.

Fantastic. biggrin

Cheers Ken, I think I'll have to make the effort next year. It sounds like Reading before it became, well, pop.

I haven't seen Steve Hillage for years. You've taken me back so far that it makes me feel very old, and, more to the point, incredibly jealous. I never saw BTO, or even ELP, but if this carries on, it would be sacrilege not to make the effort. There are definitely some bands who will slip off the bottom, and never be seen again.

I saw Greg being interviewed on TV, hence this thread, and he's a big guy. Good to hear that he can still cut the mustard with the pies and chips.

Joe Bonamassa is great, and keeps a beacon burning, but what I'd really like to see is the bands that I missed out on the first time round. Joe, unfortunately, wasn't around in my day!

Thank you very much Ken. Good to hear that you had a good day, and that it wasn't one of those gigs where you expect an amazing line up that just doesn't live to the expectations.

I went as well. Personally I thought ELP were dire but they always were. Keith Emerson was unrecognisable but he is undoubtably an accomplished keyboard player. Problem for me is the lack of aural variety over 90 minutes.

Started with the end of Wishbone Ash who were also pretty dire although it looked like their old fans enjoyed it. Then saw Steve Hackett. I was watching from towards the back with a mate and we both thought the female bass player in the leather kilt and blonde pig-tails looked pretty fit. Later on we saw her in the distance from behind and went over for a better look/perve and b****R me it was a bloke: Nick Begg formerly of Kajagoogoo to be precise.

Uriah Heap were surprisingly good and I enjoyed Marillion (whose guitarist must have been hanging out at the pie stand with Greg Lake) before we went off for food and to get a good position for ELP.

We enjoyed the festival but they ran out of proper beer at 6 on Sunday and 5.30 on Saturday. 2nd festival in 2 weeks I have been to that has run out of beer early on.

But it was a good, well-organised festival and I will go again.
