Olskool 'Retro' House?
Discussion
I was in to house in the early 90's. Used to go to Gatecrasher, Fantasy Island, Club UK, MoS, Good Times etc most weekends and failed two colleges as a result. Too much class A .
It makes me smile when I hear re-mixed versions of the classics in to modern pop or 'dance' music. Bring back Groverider, Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling....

Been to a few Retro nights when I was younger. Now they just seem to attract lads looking for a brawl and tacky lasses. Certainly wouldn't go to one now, even if I did like the music.
The way they run Retro is wrong in my opinion. They are conning the punters but it's an absolute cash cow so I see why they keep going with it for as long as they can get away with.

You know you're getting old when the music that formed you as a person is now considered retro.
There's life in my glowsticks yet however.
House with huge piano breaks used to be referred to as Italian House.
The finest ever piano house tune was Derrick May as Rhythym is Rhythym doing Strings of Life.
Strictly speaking May was a Detroit Techno producer but Strings is just so epic, so so epic as to sound fresh as a daisy today despite being recorded in 1989.
When it was first played at the Paradise Garage the crowd loved it so much it was played 7 times in a row.

I know what you mean about the politics but I just went for the music really....nothing in my opinion came close to it
Just before my time, I was one year old when Strings of Life was a hit and then about 12 by the end of the decade when the big piano riffs faded. Mind you, it certainly influenced what I like and what I listened to in future, there is some nice house coming back though - we've finally picked up some of the more chilled out Balearic House which is much more my bag than whats been around for the last few years.
Unfortunately Balearic House has never really taken off. You would rarely find a decent night playing that genre. I suppose it is more 'bar' than 'club'. I love the way that Balearic House is like Pop music in Ibiza. Get in a taxi, go in a shop, go to a bar and you will hear it. I'm not sure I would like it if it was that popular in UK for example but when the sun is out and you have got a San Miguel in hand, it is perfect.
