This album, i think, is good. Not great, but good.

Whenever i read music mags and such, it always gets a slagging. Yeah okay, the first album is brilliant, i agree, one of my favourites, but what were people expecting of the second album? I mean it was released 5 years later, its bound to sound a little bit different, especially after a court case, and a ton of coke!

But i suppose when its released the same year as Definitely Maybe, it kinda gets overshadowed which is fair enough, as Oasis released a brilliant debut album too....

Go and stick the Second Coming on and its good some great tracks on there, "Ten Storey Love Song", "Daybreak", "Good Times", "Tears", "How Do You Sleep", "Love Spreads".... Okay, and a couple of duds like "Straight To The Man", and "Begging You", which are a bit rubbish.

I just think it gets a rough deal, and kinda annoys me.... which is stupid.

Any other thoughts?

Regards,

A Second Coming fan.

I've always liked it too, even 'Begging you'. Actually, that is one of my favourite tracks.

There was a fair amount of snobbery in the music press at the time of its release, and has been ever since I suppose.

Like you though, I prefer to make my own mind up!

It's not a patch on the debut album - not much is to be honest, even today, but there are some real gems in there. It's also nowhere near as bad as the media hype at the time would suggest.
Plus, it has Love Spreads on it, which is a seriously great song to turn up loud. smile

+1 - it's a great slice of indie-dance crossover, and one that doesn't sound ridiculously out of date now smile

I actually think it's more expansive than the first album, which still brings back fond memories... and yes, the press waited years for a follow-up and were then pre-occupied with flogging the latest Britpop wannabies ahead of anything with much depth - killed a lot of decent 'alternative' music IMHO - especially when some of the once inspirational acts started to jump on the bandwagon!...

It is too long and there is some rubbish on there - it isn't really a cohesive album. However, about half the tracks are great: love Spreads, 10 Storey Love Song, Tears, and Tracks of My Tears especially.

I think the problem was that the first album was a complete classic, no weak songs in my opinion, whereas Second Coming is half of a great album, the other half average fillers.

They set a high standard 1st time around and it was a tall order to better it IMO, however i do agree the good tracks on it are very very good.

I really like it, and I think 'Begging You' is one of the better tracks on there. I remember reading one of the Chemical Brothers said it was his favourite album of the 90s.

Wasn't Second Coming their THIRD album?

1. Eponymous first album (I wanna be adored, I am the resurrection, Waterfall etc.)
2. Turns Into Stone (Mersey Paradise, Fools Gold, One love etc.)
3. Second Coming

Once you get the 4:35 intro out of the way - Breaking into Heaven is damn fine.

Turns into Stone wasn't a studio album, but a collection of everything else they released: non-album singles and b-sides, as their original label Silvertone was fond of a good cash-in when the band buggered off.
