Recently, I bought a Gibson SG Standard and after playing it for about a month and swapping between that and my Les Paul, I've decided that it really could be set up a lot better (action and intonation).

I'm keen to hear of other guitarist's experiences of having their guitar set up properly by an experienced guitar tech. Any horror stories or places to avoid? Also, does anyone know any decent guitar techs in the Guildford/Surrey area?

Thanks.

Guitar village are near you and while I've not used them for setup I bought a new strat from them and that was setup very nicely. I'd take both guitars to them and ask them to set the sg up like the les paul if that's what you're after.

I've used sticks and strings in thatcham to set up a rickenbacker and an acoustic and have been very happy with the results but that's a fair bit further from you than guitar village.

Read up on it and you should be abe to do it yourself!

(Although I'd always leave cutting nut slots to an expert.)

I have always set up my own. Lots of info on the net to help you. As above though, i would leave nut cutting and truss rod adjustments to the experts

Thanks for all the replies. I think the SG will need a truss rod adjustment, if not a nut-cut so it's not something I can really undertake.

After looking at the Guitar Village website I noticed that they do setups themselves, however they also had a link to this guy who looks pretty good and isn't all that far away from me. http://www.jwhite-guitarworkshops.co.uk

I'll give him a call and see what he recommends.

i always disliked the action on sg`s.it was enough of a culture shock coming off strats to a les paul but all round i found the les paul much easier to get set up right.top tip, don`t get into scalloping your own frets because you will come unstuck!!

I highly recommend Jonathan Law at Feline in Surrey. Simply one of the best luthiers in the UK.
