In that price range, I'd suggest either Yamaha Pacifica Series or Squier Strat. Assuming you're not that fussed on pickup combinations, and other details, both play well for the money.
But really, visit guitar shops and try out anything in your price range, and pick the one that suits you. For most of my early years (about eight years, thinking about it) I played a candy apple Les Paul copy. I can't remember the make, but I really liked it; it was comfortable (for me) to play, the action was very good, the sound was more than passable, and I loved the looks of it. I only changed it when I spotted a spectacularly good deal on an Ibanez JS.
