Saw the thread about PD getting arrested again and thought to myself, I've never even heard one of their songs so while he might be a cock, he might have produced work of outstanding quality.

Nope - I've lived through two eras of outstanding indie music in the 80's and the 90's (three if you include punk although I was a touch yoiung for that but was very much into SKA in the mid to late 70's) - The Libertines are absolutely rubbish. I listened to three tracks on youtube and all of them where nothing better than a bunch of 15 year olds who have just started playing because it might help them get chicks. Is this the best of the current indie crop or the Emperor's old clothes?

Well, I wouldn't class The Libertines as current as it's been 6 years since they last played together(all 4 memebers). Indie now isn't what indie was all those years ago, and the current state of affairs is dire, to say the least. Bombay Bicycle Club, being an exception :-)

I suggest you listen to their first album and then listen to it again. It might grab you. That said, it definitely made an impact at a certain time, that is difficult to replicate years later.

I first wrote them off as Strokes wannabe band, then gave them a listen, and listened again, and then changed my mind. To a different generation, they were The Smiths of their time. I love them, and can't wait to see them again.

How can you get past the age of 16 without realising that musical taste is subjective?

No it's not - I'm always right when it comes to music wink

They've done a few (admittedly rustic) decent songs - don't look back into the sun, can't stand me now, kilamangiro, what became of the likely lads.
Reminds me of my mates bands when we were kids.

It's disposable pop with a punk ethic, and some witty lyrics.

Utterly unworthy of the attention, but fun for five minutes.

I've seen more than a few bands, and I can honstly say, that seeing them or Babyshambles, has been in my top gigs of all time. The energy and excitement is palpable.

Even if I had never heard them before, the fact that they were signed by Rough Trade, and produced by Mick Jones, would make me listen to them.

IMO, there hasn't been another band in the last 10 years as worthy as them. You can go to Camden on any night of the week, and hear a band trying to sound like them.
