Finding a song from the late '70s / early '80s....

I heard a song whilst on holiday with my family back in the late '70s early '80s, but just can't for the life of me find out who sung it or what it's called, and pretty much since then I've been trying to find out....

The song starts with an American police siren coming from the distance then passing by the microphone, and has some (IMO) great guitar bits to it. It doesn't help that over time some of the lyrics may ave changed in my head to what they are below. I think it was an American-Rock-kind-of-song, but I heard it whilst en route to the West Country in my dads old Cortina before I was a teenager

I think some of the verse / chorus goes like this -

I thought I patched it up [guitar - ner ne nr ner]
I thought I had it made [guitar - ner ne nr ner]
Got a new soft touch [guitar - ner ne nr ner]
Go the same old way
....

Knockin' knockin knockin
'Cos I want your love
And I want your blues......girl! (news?)


Anyone have ANY idea what this is?

Anyone have any new ideas over the past 8 years that may not have been around back in 2010

Any chance it might be "Thought I had it made" by Dr Feelgood? Time is maybe about right, though it's hard to imagine it on a mainstream radio channel. Lyrics don't really match, apart from that one line. No siren, either. One guitar-y thing that starts with a siren is White Riot by the Clash, but that's a bit too easy. Maybe ask in the Music section?

White Lion's version of Radar Love has sirens at the start but the lyrics don't seem to match so maybe not that.
