Sequencing software
Discussion
Not sure whether this is better in here or Computing.
It's a long time since I did any sequencing - Cubase on the ST and Cakewalk for DOS on the PC!
Looking at getting back into it so could use a decent sequencer.
There is a catch - I don't have any MIDI modules any more, only a master keyboard, so is there anything free that will sequence AND work as a sound source? In an ideal world would be great if I could use it for recording audio too but I realise that may be a bit much to ask for a freebie
The other problem is that I don't have a particularly fast PC - AMD XP2700 with 2GB of RAM...

A bit of research has turned up Cubasis VST 5 for £30 or so which looks pretty good.
I think I need something supporting VST for effects / extra instruments, my sound card will provide the standard GM crap I suspect.
It's TerraTec Aureon 7.1 PCI which is probably nothing special but hopfully has some decent basic sounds and hopefully enough space to add a few more into.
I'm concerned about the latency issue I have read about - I have seen people mention ASIO drivers so hopefully my soundcard is compatible - although I have just realise the MIDI/gameport backplate is missing

Free is a bit of a tall order perhaps, if you are looking to keep it all legit. Still, you could do a lot worse than take a look at "Reaper" I believe you can try this as an unlimited demo, and pay up when your conscience catches up with you. But fortunately it's only $60 for a single user license.
I can't remember what, if any sound sources it comes with. But it can take the usual plugin formats, so im sure there are some free ones up for grabs out there.

It's pretty good, although I use a Mac, and the Mac version was not as developed at the time I tried it. So I stuck with Logic and Reason myself.

Tea...
I have a dozen or so midi modules (no you can't have them), but they are hardly ever used any more.. it's all software driven these days.
There are 12 grand pianos, 2 symphony orchestras and about 300 drummers all sitting on my hard disk.
Times have changed!

Yes things have moved on somewhat since I was using Cubase on an ST and mixing down from an ADAT!I have a dozen or so midi modules (no you can't have them), but they are hardly ever used any more.. it's all software driven these days.

A composer friend of mine has an absolute monster PC and has spent a lot of money getting together the best sounds he can find - he works mostly orchestrally with Sibelius so it's a means to an end.Times have changed!

VST should come with a number of soft synths, you no longer need a sound card with a synth on it. if latency is a problem and you don't have a joystick MIDI port on your card, get a combined USB audio interface/controller keyboard like an M Audio Ozone for example.I think I need something supporting VST for effects / extra instruments, my sound card will provide the standard GM crap I suspect.
