hi all, i have been trying to find the name of a tune played on top gear.....but its the 'dave' channel version. i looked on final gear but they just list the BBC listings. its the prog where they use the light weight supercars to find the best driving roads, the tune is played near the end where the three guys find the stelvio pass, the music sounds a bit choral/classical is the best way i can describe it. i guess its royalty free and thats why 'dave' used it but it fits the scene better i think,
cheers....tom

From the comments, it appears Dave uses a different track!

Which of course they wouldn't do. (God forbid!)

If that is the clip, then it sounds like pretty bog standard 'production music' (aka Library music). It's what I do for a living (Top Gear have used a lot of mine over the years. Not this clip though - sadly). Basically the Top Gear production office get CDs of particular styles of music and when the editor complies the 'packages' he shoves what he/she considers appropriate music.... and then us composers get paid every time it's shown on Dave wink

Forgive me if you knew all that.

What happens when they use non-library music? I sometimes hear Ludovico Einaudi.

Each piece of music (if registered with The Performing Rights Society) gets a unique code. So that bit of music that you mentioned, (like any of mine) will have a number, and when any film or TV prog uses some music, they must tell PRS that number - PRS then associate said music with said prog.....

.... then whenever said prog is on TV (in any country that uses PRS - currently about 150), PRS are again told, and grab money for composer.

Composers get statements from PRS every quarter with a royalty payment. Generally we never know where our music has been used until that time. I seem to earn a lot from 'Friends' at the moment... never seen it, but they are using some of my stuff - which gets broadcast again and again in different countries.

So it doesn't matter if the music was by Sting or me... the code will ident the composer.

scratchchin so you're saying that the TV company 'Dave' got hold of an episode of Top Gear, took off the existing music, but left on the commentary, and added a piece of their own music?

The Einaudi bits are the only time my missus (another musso) takes any notice of Top Gear.

It does happen Steve.

We have supplied (at broadcasters request) split track audio of programmes before, so they can replace the music if they choose to.

Basically, we put the narration/VO etc on tracks 1 and 2, and the music tracks on tracks three and four.

The music on 3&4 although technically a separate track, is recorded at "mix" level, so that it dips in volume where needed for a VO to go over the top.... if you play the tape out with all four channels open, it will play perfectly with no need for someone to ride the levels.

Presumably, if they change the music (easy for them to do) they log it accordingly, and inform PRS appropriately.

A hell of a lot of the Top Gear music is changed for Dave (and indeed other re-broadcasts of Top Gear or DVD issues of their stuff) due to the different licensing deals. So many 'classic' moments have been ruined where the music is what really made them work in the original version. It been going on for years, I bought Top Gear Supercars on VHS 15-odd years ago and was gutted to find the Aston Martin Vantage piece was no longer soundtracked by Pink Floyd).

quite a bit of the music gets changed by 'dave' the same episode dumps the matt monroe bit for something a school band could do better, oddly the bit of music i am trying to find i think goes better with the mood of the scene.

So that's why Dave changed the music in segment where the presenters make a tune using various bits of trim from British Leyland cars. It was originally set to 'Money' by 'Pink Floyd' and Dave replaced it with some library music. Been bugging me for ages as to why they did that. I assumed a programme just licensed the music for that episode - didn't realise a payment was made for each broadcast.

if any music by an artist is used on any show it has to be payed for, so 'dave' use a lot of licence free stuff to save money. i suppose they will have to pay the bbc each time they show top gear, but not being an expert i might be wrong. think back to the days of free napster, a lot of artists got stroppy about people down loading their music free instead of buying it on cd/tape or whatever.

A shot in the dark here, but they have used this song a couple of times.

It matches your description and the intro is perfect for rolling aerial views of stunning landscapes.
