Morning All

I'm going to add to my guitar collection shortly and I've always fancied a PRS - the whole handmade, glorious finishes and quality thing has suckered me in somewhat...

Before I go and get over excited and sit down and play a whole load of them I was wondering what the owners here really thought of them - are they worth the money.

Interested in your thoughts - I found a really nice CE 22 in a natural finish and a Standard 24 in metallic gold/green that may require further investigation!

Oh, and gratuitous pics are welcome biggrin

Cheers

I've never played a PRS, but I've also been considering chopping in my Strat for either a PRS or a Gibson SG Standard. I'll watch the thread with interest.

Fantastic guitars. All 3 neck profiles feel great, my favourite being the thin. Very well made, massively versatile and buying my custom 24 led me to get rid of my Suhrs, Tyler and Les Pauls.

The standard pickups didn't sound very good to my ears so I had BKP Cold Sweat and Mule pickups installed whilst having a pro set-up carried out by SGL in Swansea.

I think other companies line up the bookmatched tops better, especially the quilts but that (along with the tone of the standard pickups) is just subjective.

I'll never sell mine.

The best electric I've ever played was a PRS CU22 just like Colin's above. It certainly flattered my lack of talent. They beautiful to look at too. I'd like to have one one day.

What's the spec / price you're after for yours then Colin?

Hey Dai, just do it!!!.....best guitar purchase you will ever make. I was a confirmed Gibson guy for many years, but got turned on to PRS about 2 years ago. Currently have a 2001 cu22 10 top in faded midnight green, w/f neck, and I have a ME 3 on order with the new narrowfield p/ups. Just beware that the CEs are bolt-on necks. And definately get your self over to the birds and moons forum.....some very very knowledgable cats over there, with some STUNNING guitars!!

My 2p.
PRS are not as well made as the price suggests. Being a big american company, they have a huge marketing machine behind them.
For my money, look at finding a top Patrick Eggle. For the size, look at a Vienna Pro. If you can go a bit smaller, try a Berlin Pro.
I have a rare Anniversary Berlin, but have had a Vienna, and I have a 25th Anniversary PRS in amber glow for sale.

FWIW, I sold a limited edition Ibanez JS Series for a PRS 6 years ago purely on account of the way it played and how comfortable I was playing it.

It's not an archtop, just a boggo "Santana" model. But it is well built, sounds good clean, looks good, with a great action.

ETA: this one, in this colour:

Ignore Eggle, he's biased! punch (Only joshing, Eggles are lovely guitars).

All I can tell you extra about my PRS is it has the Dragon 2 open pickups and the nicest classic sunburst '58 type Les Paul finish I have ever personally seen on a PRS. I want somewhere between £1349 and £1351 for it, else I'm not selling! tongue out . Thats approximately half what they go for in that spec new, from what I can see.

Anyway, I know theres a 'show your guitars thread' elsewhere, but whilst I'm here, check out the rest of my collection, including the PRS. . Hope you enjoy them.

Top from left.

Godin Acousticaster signed by my main man Francis Dunnery ex It Bites. The acoustic that thinks an electric!

Blade Durango Deluxe. The best £200 (used) I ever spent. A great little rock guitar.

Fylde Alchemist acoustic. Beautifully made in Cumbria but surplus to requirements. Also for sale.

THE PRS! wink

Bottom row from left

Fender Squier. £29.95 from Cash Generator. Too cheap to pass by. Not bad actually.

Wilkes Gaf Bass. Few have ever heard of it, (Wilkes guitars had 5 minutes fame in the late 80's) but the nicest, funkiest, easy to play bass. I have honestly never played a bass guitar that feels like a part of me when I play it like this one does.

Blade Texas Junior. Swamp ash body, un-laquered and oiled finish. It has an earthy, organic feel to it when touched. Fitted with a Roland Hex Pickup for use with my Roland VG88.

Aria Pro2 Bass. Literally found lying in the street in a case outside a guitar show in Manchester 10 years ago yikes . Handed in to the Police and never claimed, so I snaffled it back!

The one guitar I wish I still had though more than any other, is a 1958 Gibson 330, which I bought for about £350 from Rock Island in Oldham in 1982. The bodywork was battered like Rory Gallagher's Strat! I was in my early 20's at the time and too young too appreciate what it was, but what a lovely guitar! (I've always had a fascination for beaten finish axes like Rory's. I'd really like a genuinely knackered Fender Jazz bass one day!).

Shall I show you my drums next? wink

I regularly employ the best session guitarist in the UK. He always brings a PRS to the session (and quite often plays it).

I guess like anything it's a case of "try one", but mine has the so called "wide" neck, and to be honest it's about 1mm bigger than my LP and I dont notice any difference or problems (and I dont exactly have the biggest hands)

That's a job I'd like to do but I'm just not good enough - I used to get a fair amount of local work a few years back but you guys who truely make a living at it are a whole different level.

I used to fill in in a band where the regular guitarist was a session musician and was often away - he was incredible to the point of being depressingly good!
