BBC to kill off 6Music!
Discussion
I'm gutted about this - it's the only popular music station I listen to and the only one where you can hear the latest "non-commercial" music without adverts. XFM is the nearest thing to it, but as well as the adverts, you can't get it outside London.
How do they work out listening numbers anyway? I know so many people who only bought a DAB radio so they could listen to this station.

It's a great shame as it's a station I've listened to since early doors. Having said that I think that the quality of the station has dropped massively and if they take the few decent shows that are still on it to radio 2 then I think that'll be job done.
There's been some brilliant shows though. I was absolutely gutted when phil jupitus stopped doing the breakfast show but admitedly that was a while ago. Some of the presenters on now (specifically the guy on the breakfast show) are below commercial radio standard.

You mean Shaun Keaveny? I always switch over to him when the Today programme has Thought for the Day and think he's fantastic. There's been some brilliant shows though. Must admit though, when Adam and Joe finished their Saturday morning slot, I've been listening to it less.

Ive been listening to 6 music for some years as it seemed to be aimed at those who find the music and DJs of radio 1 just annoying but too young for radio 2. But recently I think it has lost its direction with the playlist and daytime presenters (lauren laverne, nemone) being more R1 than 6.
I will be sad to see it go but have found NME Radio to be a good replacement. I believe it is available country wide through DAB. The only problem being it is a commercial station so you have to put up with the adverts but still better than Radio 1 or local commercial's.

Oooh, looks like Absolute could step in and rescue it, yay!

It's funny that. I bought a DAB radio to listen to BBC R6, and now I listen to Planet Rock. R6 was great when it started, but it finally dropped of the scale for me when Phil Jupitus left. How do they work out listening numbers anyway? You can improve your reception by getting a directional DAB antenna. I've only got an omni. It is slightly directional, but I arranged it to get the best reception from the local transmitter at Heathfield.
I'm halfway between the boundary of Greater London and the South Coast. I can get XFM. I don't know, but I think you're right. XFM more than likely comes from Crystal Palace.

This is not set in stone yet and it could be a ruse by Mark Thompson to get more money or just him venting because of the changes the Tories are threatening if they win the election.
If it were to happen, it would be a crying shame. It's the only radio station I can listen to from 8am to 6pm without having to tune out when a particular presenter comes on.
Some are stronger than others, but now they've moved that moron Lamb to the early weekend slot, I've got time for nearly all of the Music6 schedule and some of the output is really very good indeed.
There's a good piece here which says it all really:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/tvandradiob...
I think there will be enough of an outcry to save it one way or another, although it would lose a lot of its appeal if it went commercial IMO.
It won't hurt to join the Save BBC 6Music Facebook group and put a complain into the BBC's complaints dept, although looking at what takes priority on the complaints page at the moment, i'm not sure what effect it will have:

Complaint
We've received complaints from viewers who were unhappy it was insinuated that Lucas killed Sugar the dog.
The BBC's response
Regular viewers of EastEnders will know that Lucas has already killed two people in order to protect his reputation. Although it is never explicit that Sugar dies, the story does indeed suggest that Lucas has killed her. This behaviour is completely in keeping with his character.
EastEnders does not condone the killing of dogs, just as it does not condone killing people. No animals were harmed in the making of this story.

The other thing is that 6 music is not that expensive to run. The presenters aren't big name, money grabbers and I cannot believe they would make any material saving by scrapping it.
I will check out NME Radio though it's the adverts that really annoy me, I just cannot bear listening to them.

Started listening to 6music a couple of months ago and stuck with it for about a month and that was enough!
What I found intensely annoying was between every record they had to play a 6music jingle that is usually made up with repeating 6music several times and sometimes up to 5 times.
The dj was constantly telling us his/her name and their chatter was neither interesting or amusing.
It is not needed because being on DAB it tells you that info on the scrolling window.
They also have a play list that favours some artists the extent you are sick of hearing it they play their songs so much. The playlist means you hear the same songs three times a day every day and it is just too much.
The beeb has a station where they can do something different but they just follow the same formats as on R1 and R2
I have gone back to R2 and R4.
I found the late evening stuff a lot better it was just the day time stuff that is a bit amateurish and more like local radio

OK it's not perfect, but if you are complaining about hearing the same song three times a day and a few jingles in between, you just don't realise how bad things could be if it was bought by a commercial station and what a loss it will be if it is just shut down.R2 has a playlist as well you know. And I know what I'd rather listen to (Goldfrapp being the only exception):
R2 A List this week:
Amy MacDonald - Don’t Tell Me That It’s Over
Goldfrapp - Rocket
Leona Lewis - I Got You
Mary J Blige - I Am
Michael Bublé - Cry Me A River
MIKA- Blame It On The Girls
Nerina Pallot - I Don’t Want To Go Out
Raul Malo - Moonlight Kiss
Robbie Williams - Morning Sun
Rod Stewart- (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher
6Music A list this week:
Delphic - Halcyon
Gorillaz - Stylo
Groove Armada - Paper Romance
Jimi Hendrix - Bleeding Heart
Jonsi - Go Do
Mumford & Sons - The Cave
The Strange Boys - Be Brave
Tunng - Hustle
Vampire Weekend - Giving Up The Gun
Yeasayer - O.N.E
I prefer the music that 6 plays though I am getting sick of hearing Mumford all the time but it's the jingles which are pointless.
They are just not needed as with digital I can see the station I am listening to and I know what the station is because is because I tuned to it!
They play them between every record. If they play two tracks together they put a jingle in the middle of the segue.

Presumably the idents in between programmes on the telly also annoy you? They are just not needed as with digital I can see the station I am listening to and I know what the station is because is because I tuned to it!

I'm not having a go, but I don't really notice the interruptions on 6Music as the main content is good enough to hold my attention.
Jingles and idents are an intrinsic part of radio and TV and have been for many years.

If I listened to more of the Radio, I would definitely choose 6Music, just a shame it is digital as I can't get it in the car.

Yes they do!!! On the TV channel 5 were the first to put the ID in the top corner because they had seen it in the USA and now we get it on all the minority stations. Why do they have to tell me I'm watching HD channel or BBC3 or BBC4?I'm not having a go, but I don't really notice the interruptions on 6Music as the main content is good enough to hold my attention.

They don't do it on BBC1 or BBC2.
Radio station id was a throwback to the pirate days when stations were on medium wave and close together so they needed a jingle so you could tell if you were on the station you wanted.
Now we have a digital readout it tells us the DJ, the song title and who is playing it and the station and because the BBC stations are being run by people trained from the dark ages they think they have to do things like it has always been done.
Listening to R4, the only time they tell you you are listening to R4 is on the hour with the news. Why the other stations have to do anything different from that is just not needed.
They just need to move on with the change in technology with the way they present programmes instead of trying to sound like a commercial station from the 60's
