What was it played on? Just had another listen and although I know it's supposed to be a guitar, I'm still not sure, it's a very slow attack, sounds more like a wind instrument in that respect.

So, if it was aguitar, how was it done, if not, then what?

You can make pretty much any sound with various effects pedals.

Indeed, but the song in question was recorded in 1965, when effects pedals as we understand them had yet to be developed.

I'd imagine it'd be played on an ancient fender amp turned up to the point of destruction.

According to Guitarist magazine in their 'fuzz special' a few months back the pedal used was a Gibson Maestro Fuzz-Tone FZ-1.
