Was given one of these as a sweetner when I bought a guitar during the summer.

Only just taken it out of the box and had a little play. Doesn't seem to do much really.

Anyone else have a better experience - I'm assuming that I need to spend more time with it to learn its abilities.

When it comes down to it, when you're a talentless oaf like me, you'll just have more crap to put in the loft. Something to bear in mind before making any purchases. thumbup (The amount of software and hardware I've bought over the years with dreams of actually finishing a tune...)

Heh, I know what you mean, I have tons of Software and Hardware free and purchased that I don't use enough to justify giving it room. I'm sure the Mrs would like the mixing desk I've used once in 5 tears out and thats only the physical stuff she can see!

I need some motivation to get playing and gigging again, she promisde me a Rickenbacker for my 40th Birthday but only if I'm active in a band.

I have one, I think it's a great piece of kit, bu then I only bought with one thought in mind. If you wanna be able to replicate the stuff you see on You Tube you will need exceptional timing when playing the seperate parts and looping them up, it is really far harder than it looks.

However, I use mine to just drop whooshes and bass sounds and FX when I'm DJing. The bass sounds work particularly well if you have a big powerful PA, they sound a little thin at home. But in a club the depth it can reach is pretty amazing. All in not a bad little toy for £100.

As I suspected. smile I'll stick to buggering about with my MC-303.

This is exactly the kind of thing I can't do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WH76A61b6Qw

FYI it's all loops and beats he programmed himself. There's nothing I recognise from the standard on-board samples.

If you want something to make farts/beeps/squeals and aren't afraid to learn to play a bit (not rocket science). Monosynths are bloody good value.

I've had a Minimoog, which I didn't rate value wise. Far better is an old thing called a Jen SX1000. They go for around £100

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNjBvB5KrSU&fea...

Old fashioned synthesisers are a must if you're into this sort of stuff.

You can either go for stuff that is more performance related or stuff that is more "sound processor" ish. EMS' rule at this sort of thing.

As much as I like the Kaossilator, you can get into the world of Dr Who noises on the cheap if you know where to look. I'd start with a Kaossilator and then get hold of an old Jen. The glide function is utterly mental.

Some excellent stuff there!

To the synth experts - I'm thinking of getting something to play around with and let the kids mess with - what synths would be able to replicate the synth sound -

1) at the start of Kasabian "Underdog" - right at the start - and a few places in the track

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz9siymKwGk

and even better:

2)the synth sound in the "breaks" on the "Example" track "she won't go quietly" - the wah, wah, wah sound that starts at 45/46 seconds and tracks right to left (Need decent Bass sepakers to hear!)

The first appears to be a monosynth with 2 oscillators and the sound being modified by the cutoff frequency on the lowpass filter.

Second is a square wave with a slight bit of resonance on the filter and then the cutoff frequency being synced to a LFO (Low frequency oscillator).

A Jen would make all of those noises. If you like your farts with a bit more fatness and your filters with a bit more bite, Moog always cut it (sound wise) probably something like a Prodigy (Minimoogs are a silly price). You have a choice after that to go modern analogue with something like a Nord Lead or go down the stupidly priced Dr Who stuff from Dr Who era.

I'd buy a Jen to fart around on, a Nord Lead to gig with a musical band and a EMS VCS3 to make Dr Who noises with.

I really want a VCS3. I have no use for one though, but I could busy myself for hours.

If you want RTD2 noises and bonkers Dalek stuff you need something with "sample and hold" on it, thus:-

Ring Modulator:-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZbOfDlfdqc

Is something which you put 2 signals in and it gives you the sum and difference of all the components of the wave. You can make mad metallic clangs and dalek voices with 'em.

Do me another favour? Post a link to a web site where I can buy a unit that will do all of the above!!! biggrin Don't want a relic - just soemthing new that I can plug into and Amp and get similar sounds to those tracks!!

Thanks again!

Well nothing beats fiddling about with a real oldfashioned analog machine with loads of knobs & buttons, and having built quite sizeable modular synths in a distant past I do know what I'm talking about... The handson feeling of using patch leads and immediately affecting any parameter cannot be beat. Having said that, as you will likely know there are quite a few modular softsynths around which come eerily close to the real things soundwise. I find that combining one of those (VAZ modular is a personal favourite, but the Arturia stuff or of course Reaktor sound great as well) with a midi controller with a bunch of knobs & buttons like e.g. a Behringer BC2000 is enough for hours of fun, especially if your just into creating strange noises and modifying microphone or other sound input even in real time. The sounds from the videos can easily be obtained this way, even from the many freeware soft synths.
