I'm very lucky to have two small boys, ages 5 & 6. My oldest likes dance music & frequently rides around in the back of my car waving his arms around to Ministry of Sound compilation stuff, whilst my 5 year old particularly likes reciting the lyrics to 'Banned in the USA' by 2 Live Crew.

Clearly, they are influenced by the music I play - but is this a bit wrong at their age? What do the PH massive play when your kids are at home/in the car etc?

Nothing wrong at all with getting your kids to listen to slightly less mainstream music.

I was a little depressed last night when SWMBOs daughter commented on a music advert, one of those "Now" type compilations. She was saying "wow, I like that Cheryl Cole". I just said "She can't sing".

On the flip side, she does seem to like some of the Queen stuff.

For my youngest I've tried to put on some of the music from my youth, it was quite cool to see him, only just able to walk, trying to dance to some Billy Idol .....

My 7 yo lad has been listening to things as varied as The Small Faces, Pink Floyd, Faith no More, Led Zeppelin, Tori Amos, Kate Bush since he was 3 or 4. He loves it. Listens to music a lot. Plays drums too, and has been to see my band whenever possible.

I gave my now 8 year old my old iPod a couple of years back with all my stuff still on it. His favourites of my extremely eclectic 20GB worth were interesting.. Ramones, Pogues and Billy Bragg

My 7 year old loves ABBA! Which is nice. smile He also enjoys Mika, the Barenaked Ladies and the Grease soundtrack. He seems to really enjoy female vocalists, Don't Cry For Me Argentina is a big hit! (ETA: The Covington original, not that Madonna nonsense...) He also claims to like the Jonas Brothers because all his mates go on about them, but I gave him one of their albums and he doesn't seem to be that fussed about it. I don't think he's even listened to it all the way through.

I generally find that if I like it, he'll like it too. I do wonder how much is genuine liking and how much is liking the music just to please me - but he'll often listen to the above even if I'm not listening with him. He's got his own iPod - one of my old ones that would be sitting doing nothing otherwise. He's got quite a selection on there. Although it seems nothing I say will persuade him to like Rammstein. smile

When he was little, I was chatting to the girls at his nursery and they asked me whether we played a lot of 1970s music at home. It turns out they had the radio on, and when the Bee Gees were played, our son put his toys down, toddled across to the radio and started dancing. hehe

My Dad weaned me off the Michael Jackson, Roxette and Kylie with stuff like Queen, Bowie and Dylan. Then I found his Black Sabbath and Deep Purple records, and the rest is history. I reckon I got more use out of his stereo between the ages of 6 and 16 than he ever did!

My collection starts with early Beatles/Stones, then goes through The Move & a bit of Glam (T Rex/Bowie) into Sabbath, Zeppelin & Hawkwind, then onto Motorhead, AC/DC, Metallica, etc. I never played "chart friendly" stuff in the car while my kids were growing up, just whatever I liked at the time.

My eldest daughter (now 23) got heavily into the Beatles when she was quite young, then dabbled with Brit Pop (albeit with no encouragement from me). And then one day she was in my car and I had "Iommi" (the Tony Iommi solo album) in the CD player. She asked what it was and if I had anything else like that. One of the CDs I loaned her was Metallica's black album. They quickly became her favourite, and still are. She's seen them 13 times & met them twice. She also likes Sabbath, Machine Head, Korn, Stone Sour, etc.

My other two daughters (19 & 20) have been heavily influenced by me and their elder sister. The 19 year old is a Korn fan, and the 20 year old is into Coheed & Cambria, Stone Sour & Apocalyptica.

I'm pleased to say that they regard the mainstream Cowell-influenced chart fodder with the same degree of derision as I do.

I have everything from Opera to thrash/death metal, mostly thrash though and the kids listen to most of it, although I don't play Steel Panther while they are around.

5yo likes Keane, Thompson Twins and Sabbath. 2yo likes her nursery rhymes still, which is fair enough...

Nah, best thing for that is "Greatest Ice Cream Van Hits, Vol 1".

They fall for it every time.

My kid is 20 months old and just listens to whatever I put on at the moment (like she has a choice). She seems to prefer the more upbeat rock stuff but I'm sure once she starts getting older she'll get her own tastes and turn her back on my old fashioned stuff.

Rather disturbingly, she seemed to really like Staraoke (TV program with kids doing karaoke). She also dances when I play Knocking on Heaven's Door, which is fortunate since it's the only song I can sing and play simultaneously. getmecoat
