Ok, probably been asked before. I know there are USB turntables to convert records to MP3, but is there anyway of doing the same with tapes? I have a few old mix tapes I did that I wouldn't mind putting onto my iPod.

Cheers.

Find someone who has a recordable CD player and tape deck...?

That's how I got some old cassette stuff onto mp3.

Tape to CD-R and then rip CD-R onto mp3.

A bit long winded but works.

Tape deck out->PC audio in, Audacity software -? save as MP3 should do it.

I'd be inclined to do exactly this; especially considering it won't cost you a penny. I think Audacity also has a feature whereby it can detect gaps/tracks within the tape and therefore split the one recording into separate MP3 tracks.

I use Wave Repair. It's meant for copying vinyl onto a computer but can be used for all sorts of things. I've used it to copy both cassette and reel-to-reel tapes in the past, just plug the deck straight into the soundcard. All you need is a twin phono to single 3.5mm stereo jack lead.

I have done this with a number of tape recordings. If you have some VST software such as Cubase it's a doddle. Simply connect the tape deck out to cubase via the soundcard in, and play and record. Then convert to MP3 and bobs your uncle.

yes Did exactly this. Did a little bit of filtering on the tapes as well - ran a scratch/pop filter to remove noise from the original tape recording from the record (30 years ago!), a little high end filter to drop the tape hiss, and job done.

I bought a PlusDeck 2C Tapedeck for just this purpose - fits into a standard drive bay on a PC tower.

I never used it much so it's current;y sitting upstairs in the loft and i'm thinking about sticking it on eBay biggrin
