For christmas, I got my girlfriend an electric guitar as she plays a bit of accoustic.

As it is sat in my living room at the moment, plugged into my housemates amp, I fancied a quick go. On sunday i spent half an hour following some finger position guides. It was quite fun, it made the right noises, but it wasnt really much of a tune, and tunes are the reason you play any instrument.

Are there any really good online (youtube?) beginners guides to making a decent noise on a leccy guitar?

Try www.justinguitar.com he's really good, well regarded on a lot of guitar forums and free!

Alternatively, have a mooch on youtube for songs that you like (start with the easy ones) and see if there's a video teaching the song.

Good technique. Get her the 'present' then use it yourself!
