Sorry if a repost did search and went back quite a few pages on the music forum.

However I found myself listening to the original candle in the wind by sir elton, not a song or type of music I usually listen to but found the lyrics to be ... well quite moving. I have noticed myself listening more and more lately to lyrics (maybe age) but was wondering what others I may have missed whilst humming the catchy tune and taking no real notice.

If I can dream. Elvis Presley

There must be lights burning brighter somewhere
Got to be birds flying higher in a sky more blue
If I can dream of a better land
Where all my brothers walk hand in hand
Tell me why, oh why, oh why can't my dream come true
Oh why

There must be peace and understanding sometime
Strong winds of promise that will blow away
the doubt and fear
If I can dream of a warmer sun
Where hope keeps shining on everyone
Tell me why, oh why, oh why won't that sun appear

We're lost in a cloud
With too much rain
We're trapped in a world
That's troubled with pain
But as long as a man
Has the strength to dream
He can redeem his soul and fly

Deep in my heart there's a tremblin' question
Still I am sure that the answer, answer's gonna come somehow
Out there in the dark, there's a beckoning candle, yeah
And while I can think, while I can talk
While I can stand, while I can walk
While I can dream, please let my dream
Come true......right now

Two lovers kissing amongst the scream of midnight -
Two lovers missing the tranquility of solitude -
Getting a cab and travelling on buses -
Reading the graffiti about slashed seat affairs -

That's Entertainment.

And there’s no such thing as rock stars, there’s just people who play music,
and some of them are just like us, and some of them are dicks.
So quick, turn off your stereo, pick up that pen and paper,
you could do much better than some half-assed skinny English country singer

Alone here in the kitchen
I feel there's something missing
I'd beg for some forgiveness
But begging's not my business
And she won't write a letter
Although I always tell her
And so it's my assumption
I'm really up the junction

I'll be there for you
These five words I swear to you
When you breathe I want to be the air for you
I'll be there for you
I'd live and I'd die for you
Steal the sun from the sky for you
Words can't say what a love can do
I'll be there for you

She walked the aisle in eggshell blue
Compromising white
While the purple thistles twisted
In the fading spring twilight
She said "I do" to Gene her boy
As a thunderstorm blew in
Then they ducked inside to beat that rain and let their lives begin

Gene he worked the diamond mines
He knew not much else at all
She'd dig the dirt, fatten the herd
Then whack their heads in fall
If this life she ever questioned
She'd recall that wedding day
And the words the preacher spoke
Before he sent them on their way

He said isn't it a wonder the sun it rise and then it falls
Isn't it a wonder, yeah love it conquers all
Isn't it a wonder, let your conscience be your plain
And you will come to see these golden rings
As the perfect mark of Cain

Well their love fell to a whisper, it almost never sang at all
And as fate would have it late one night
A stranger came to call
She had killed and fried the fatted beast
For Gene and all his hounds
Then tucked them in and took a walk
To the bar outside of town
He was standing in the neon in a black mortician's hat
Rhinestones flashing in the mirror
Over the wooden bar in back
He laid all that he had on her
Which was little more than change
A few kisses and an understanding
Of the perfect mark of Cain

Isn't it a wonder the sun it rise and then it fall
Is it any wonder she felt nothing for so long
Is it any wonder she stood laughing in the morning rain
With an aching head and a new tattoo
Of the perfect mark of Cain.

Well she packed that ugly morning
With all her worn and tattered things
And paid the ticket master
With a single golden ring
As the train pulled from the station
A wino stumbled past the door
And she knew that losing everything
Was the only hope of finding more
Gene he found her goodbye note
On the nightstand by the bed
And killed the pain of his broken heart
With a gunshot to the head
The family'd thought their love was perfect
As they washed them splattered doors
Until they read the note she left him
They found crumpled on the floor

It said isn't it a wonder hello's just like goodbye
Isn't it a wonder the calm lies in the eye
Is it any wonder living and dying's just the same
And it was signed with a teardrop
The perfect mark of Cain.

There's a shoot-out at the IHOP
Between a fourth ward kid and a third shift cop.
Two time losers drinking coffee
And no one saw a thing.
Crank head, cock head, it's hard to tell.
But you can't see his face now too well.
He came in empty handed with a gun stuck in his jeans.

And the cop orders the New York club
So the waitress steps around the blood.
The last reminding sliver of some
South-flying dream.

Now the cops are telling jokes
About some we-house near Fair Oaks.
And the winos shuffle past
The last to survey the scene.
And in an hour and a quarter
All their paper work's in order.
So they finish off their pancakes
While the floor is getting cleaned.

And a body car arrives and takes...
And they're taking down the yellow tape.
And they'll all get home before daybreak
Like Sunday in New Orleans.
And the cop orders the New York club
So the waitress steps around the blood.
The last remaining sliver of some
South flying dream.

This old road goes on forever
just like the sound of goodbye
i'm watching the rain dance in the headlights
wishing this old Mustang could fly

I still hear the screen door slammin'
sounds like thunder in my mind
I still see your ring spinning on the floor
just like these wheels roll through the night

The rear view mirror casts reflections
of a life i left behind
Though these wheels keep spinning round and round and round
I can't drive you from my mind

I saw the lights of Albuquerque
they're so pretty from the west
Yet on the other side of that mountain
it's a forest at best

I know i could have done things different
i'm not saying i didn't try
But i was blind to your struggles
I see things clearer in hindsight

The rear view mirror casts reflections
of a life i left behind
Though these wheels keep spinning round and round and round
I can't drive you from my mind

Though these wheels keep spinning round and round and round
I can't drive you from my mind

"bridge over troubled water", without a shadow of doubt but as words on a page they are only half the story. you need arts vocals too. other than that, probably something from the motown era like "tracks of my tears" i also like "brothers in arms" by dire straits.

i am crying with laughter that someone seriously posted bon jovi "i'll be there for you" in a "best song lyrics" thread. its the sort of thing teenagers write in valentines cards!

blah blah blah you
blah blah blah you
blah blah blah you
blah blah blah you

clearly no one in new jersey has a dictionary as so few words rhyme with you!

If we are talking songs with a poignant story, how about "Cats in The Cradle" by Harry Chapin (and Ugly Kid Joe)

Hits home for me, as this describes the relationship I have with my father - very sad.

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say "I'm gonna be like you dad
You know I'm gonna be like you"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home dad?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw", I said "Not today
I got a lot to do", he said, "That's ok"
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

Well, he came home from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head and said with a smile
"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I can find the time
You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad
It's been sure nice talking to you"

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

Roy Harper. Black Cloud of Islam. Relates to many forms of religion over the years. Unfortunately, youtube has banned the video. Written in 1989!

I'm sick to the teeth of the news on the screen
of hisbullah scum and jihad the obscene
whose men plant the bombs and then live feeling free
to watch women and children be killed on T.V.

which satan delivers a child a death curse
in the name of a worn out collection of verse
I've not read the book so I cannot recite
but I'd bet Salman Rushdie is just about right
underneath the black cloud of islam

What kind of publicity needs so much blood
that's not for some sad diablical god
selling himself as a two-bit Macbeth
as the expect in sentencing cousins to death

and what kind of god can this be anyway
that you have to prostrate to him five times a day
with hate in your heart and a gun in your hand
is force the only thing to understand
underneath the black cloud of islam?

and the butchers who've got all this blood on their hands
are the ones who need god to be stood where he stands
blessing this kidnapping, murder and war
with books written hundreds of ages before

and woman in veils walking paces behind
doesn't sit easy in my mind
it speaks of oppression and no other choice
that rigid compliance with the loudest voice
underneath the black cloud of islam

You can put a lead bullet clean through this guitar
'cos I'm not overjoyed with the story so far
sharing a world with the nutters of god
is as good as being six feet under the sod

words that are written are all here to say
and these are the latest there are anyway
and I am the prophet so don't believe me
I'm the same as the old ones expect that I'm free
to give you a piece of my mind which is this
you're the worst of jehovas blind witlessnesses
with your feet in the door of the deepest abyss
which is underneath the black cloud of islam

Never been a fan of Billy Joel, but I heard Piano Man yesterday and thought the lyrics were very good.
Tells a story without being over wordy, if you see what I mean.

It’s nine o’clock on a saturday The regular crowd shuffles in There’s an old man sitting next to me Makin’ love to his tonic and gin He says, son, can you play me a memory? I’m not really sure how it goes But it’s sad and it’s sweet and I knew it complete When I wore a younger man’s clothes La la la, de de daLa la, de de da da da Chorus:Sing us a song, you’re the piano man Sing us a song tonight Well, we’re all in the mood for a melody And you’ve got us feelin’ alright Now John at the bar is a friend of mine He gets me my drinks for free And he’s quick with a joke or to light up your smoke But there’s someplace that he’d rather be He says, Bill, I believe this is killing me. As the smile ran away from his face Well I’m sure that I could be a movie star If I could get out of this place Oh, la la la, de de daLa la, de de da da da Now Paul is a real estate novelist Who never had time for a wife And he’s talkin’ with Davy who’s still in the Navy And probably will be for life And the waitress is practicing politics As the businessmen slowly get stoned Yes, they’re sharing a drink they call loneliness But it’s better than drinkin’ alone Chorus It’s a pretty good crowd for a saturday And the manager gives me a smile’cause he knows that it’s me they’ve been comin’ to see To forget about life for a while And the piano, it sounds like a carnival And the microphone smells like a beer And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar And say, man, what are you doin’ here? Oh, la la la, de de daLa la, de de da da da Chorus

Actually, Kanye West has the better lyrics.

If you have the opportunity to play this game of life you need to appreciate every moment. A lot of people don`t appreciate the moment until it's passed.

We buy our way out of jail but we can't buy freedom, We buy a lot of clothes when we don't really need them, Things we buy to cover up what's inside.

Nothing in life is promised except death.

I Spy by Pulp http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARCTouvWDWw

I spy a boy, I spy a girl.
I spy the worst place in the world,
in the whole wide world.
Oh you didn't do bad,
you made it out,
I'm still stuck here oh but I'll get out.
Oh yeah I'll get out.

Can't you see the giant that walks around you seeing through your petty lives?
Do you think I do these things for real?
I do these things just so I survive.
And you know I will survive.

It may look to the untrained eye,
I'm sitting on my arse all day.
I'm biding time until I take you all on.
My Lords and Ladies,
I will prevail,
I cannot fail.
Cos I spy.

Oh I've got your numbers,
taken notes,
I know the ways your minds work;
I've studied.
And your minds are just the same as mine
except that you are clever swines,
you never let mask slip,
you never admit to it,
you're never hurried.
Oh no no no.

And every night I hone my plan
how I will get my satisfaction,
how I will blow your paradise away away, away.
Cos I spy.

And it's just like in the old days -
I used to compose my own critical notices in my head.

"The crowd gasp at Cocker's masterful control of the bicycle,
skilfully avoiding the dog turd next to the corner shop."

Imagining a blue plaque
above the place I first ever touched a girl's chest,
but hold on,
you've got to wait for the best.

You see you should take me seriously.
Very seriously indeed.
Cause I've been sleeping with your wife for the past sixteen weeks,
smoking your cigarettes,
drinking your brandy,
messing up the bed that you chose together.
And in all that time I just wanted you to come home unexpectedly one afternoon,
and catch us at it in the front room.

You see I spy for a living,
and I specialise in revenge,
on taking the things I know will cause you pain.

I can't help it,
I was dragged up.

My favourite parks are car parks,
grass is something you smoke,
birds are something you shag.

Take your "Year in Provence"
and shove it up your arse.

Your Ladbroke Grove looks turn me on, yeah.
With roach burns in designer dresses,
skin stretched tight over high cheek-bones,
and thousands of tiny dryness lines beating a path to the corners of your eyes.

And every night I hatch my plan,
it's not a case of woman v man.
It's more a case of haves against haven'ts.
And I just happen to have got what you need,
just exactly what you need yeah.

La la la la la la la la la la,
in the midnight hour.
La la la la la la la la la la,
I will come to you,
I will come to you,
I will take you from this sickness,
dinner parties and champagne,

I'll hold your body and make it sing again.
Come on - sing again,
let's sing again, oh yeah,
Cos I spy,
yes,
I spy.
I spy a boy,
and I spy a girl.
I spy the chance,
to change the world,
to change your world.

Andrew W.K - Make sex

"Make Sex"

I don't want to make life, and I don't want to make death, I don't want to make love, I just
want to...

I don't want to make life, and I don't want to make death, I don't want to make love, I just
want to...

I don't want to make life, and I don't want to make death, I don't want to make love, I just
want to make sex.

Want to make sex, want to make sex oh
Want to make sex, want to make sex
Want to make sex oh, oh
Want to make sex, make sex

Want to make sex, want to make sex oh
Want to make sex, want to make sex
Want to make sex oh, oh

House of Pain by Faster Pussycat - if you're parents split when you were a kid, this song is a seriously good listen! My Immortal by Evanescence comes close 2nd

It's a little past supper time
I'm still out on the porch steps sittin' on my behind,
Waiting for you.
Wondrin' if everything's alright,
Moma said,"Come in boy, don't waste your time,"
I said,"I've got time. Well he'll be here soon."
Five years old and talkin' to myself.
Where were you? Where'd ya go? Daddy can't you tell?

I'm not tryin' to fake it, and I ain't the one to blame.
No, there's no one home in my house of pain.
I didn't write these pages and my script's been re-arranged.
No, there's no one home in my house of pain.

Wasn't I worth the time?
A boy needs a daddy like a dance to mime and all the time,
I looked up to you.
I paced my room a million times.
And all I ever got was one big line, the same old lie.
How could you?
Well I was eighteen years and still talkin' to myself.
Where were you? Where'd ya go? Daddy can't ya tell?

I'm not tryin' to fake it, and I ain't the one to blame.
No, there's no one home in my house of pain.
I didn't write these pages and my script's been re-arranged.
No, there's no one home in my house of pain.

Well if i've learned anything from this, shh, it's how to grow up
On my own.
