Given that for the time being we have the all clear to keep posting mixes, I thought I would share my latest effort with you all.

This is an eclectic selection of the kind of stuff I might listen to at home or play after a night out at a good party, and is not really at all clubby like the last mix I put out. Anyway, hopefully you will all enjoy it, it's certainly a bit of a tongue in cheek selection. Let me know what you think. smile

Oh yeah and virtually every track has been tweaked, re-edited or re-arranged by my good self. smile

OK, Mr Dobson.... If you have a chat with Mr Hoath, you know'll know who I am -no real name in the business, but I know people, first name terms with a lot of Serious (spelt properly) DJ's (etc).

I have to say, hand on heart, that this is one of the most enjoyable mixes I've ever heard. Obviously with never having span with you, or seen you spin (even if on a laptop), I can't tell if you can do this on the fly, but I have to say that right now I really don't care.

This. Is. Utterly. Superb. I'd even say brilliant.

The breaks, the slow-downs, the utter brass balls to say "I don't care", and throw something in like 'Barbie Girl'. It's not perfect (in a digital sense of seamlessness, flow and non-stop wall of sound), and that's what makes it so much better.

I realise I am very negative about DJ's who use laptops (I openly mock them during sets for checking their email), but this mix for me actually goes beyond the whole laptop thing. Your (and Mr Hoaths) mixes are stunning, but as a DJ I've never been able to see how you could do live, what you produce (I seem to remember one of you saying the whole thing took about 24 hours to do one mix). But this one makes so much sense.

Kudos. I'll be playing this for a very long time.

Well blimey! I'm quite overwhelmed by your very generous comments, it is truly appreciated and makes the whole thing worthwhile when people enjoy what I do. I'll try and provide some sort of idea as to what I did.

It's fair to say that I spent somewhere in the region of 70-80 hours working on this mix, yes it's a DJ Mix, but an awful lot of production went on. For example, The Jeru Da Damaja track, I wanted to take a one bar loop out of the track to make the mashup with Hall & Oates work. However there is not a single bar in the track that doesn't have some sort of vocal on it, whether a full word or a cut up snippet. Therefore I had to go and re-engineer the loop replacing the sounds individually but trying to do so without losing the groove of the track. It's this sort of approach I have taken throughout the mix. I could re-create something similar live but would not be easy and would probably not work if I'm honest, but in essence I'd be unlikely to play a set like this out. For example, in the mix out of Prince I have checked back and there are 35 parameters that are being altered at the same time (via automation) not even an octopus could pull that off live, and typically that is the part I'm least happy with on the whole mix. Also, a lot of the tracks have live drumming on them, so whether you wanted to re-edit them or not they would be impossible to beat mix on Vinyl or CD. I have had to (in some cases) ensure that I time lock every beat of every bar in a whole track, and each one has to be done individually so with a track that lasts 130 bars, your talking 520 markers just to get the track in time. Easy to see where the time goes eh?

I totaly understand what your saying about laptop DJ's, so I'll try and explain where I'm coming from. I taught myself to mix over 15 years ago on Vinyl, and eventually got bored with it and wanted to be more creative than just playing two records, so I moved over to a pair of CDJ's, and then about 2 1/2 years ago I went through the same process and decided I needed more. As you know I use Ableton, much like the splendid Mr Hoath, however, I agree with what your saying about checking e-mail, nobody wants to see that, but equally I don't see an issue with looking at a laptop screen instead of a CDJ screen. Anyway, I think if your going to use Ableton to just mix two tracks together like you would with two vinyl decks or two CDJ's then there is no point going to the effort and expense as really it's complete overkill and it could be seen by purists as cheating (my view is, it doesn't matter what makes the sound as long as it sounds good). As I say though, I wanted to use it to be more creative, but also allow me to be very hands on when I play out, so my current setup runs 4 channels out of Ableton and into my Pioneer 800, so I can still be very hands on and throw the faders and pots around. I also run two MIDI controllers with numerous effects and looping controls etc, this allows me to get the creative side in, when playing out I very rarely have less than two tracks playing and often have all 4 channels open at the same time, and only have to look at the laptop to select a new track and to make it play, in essence the mouse is barely used. Plus it also means I never have to turn my back on the crowd, not something that happens very often with CD or Vinyl. It is also worth mentioning that I use a piece of software called Mixed In Key to add a tag to all my tracks that tell me what key they are in, and means that I can perform mixes that sounds far more musical as a result. But like with anything, you don't have to stick to it, just another tool to help the creative process.

In terms of being able to re-create live what we do on CD, it's a tricky one, the chances are with a CD is that people are going to listen and scrutinise more closely than if they are half cut in a club, therefore I like to spend the extra time at home to make those CD's perfect. I'm pretty confident that some of our work is on a par with some commercially released Mix CD's if not better in some cases. Whereas, when playing live, I'm more likely to experiment mess around and enjoy things, make a mistake or two and just do stuff on the fly. So essentially my DJing is now more fun for me, more interesting to listen to and at end that has to be what it's about. All of course in my humble opinion.

If you ever feel the need for a demo or want to know more or just fancy a nosey then feel free to ask mate. Sorry to have gone on for ages, ended up being a bit of a brain dump.

Once again though, my sincere thanks for your feedback. smile

As per Don1's comments - this is brilliant Tex!!!

Got to say, when the drums kicked in mid Gary Jules Mad World, I knew that this was a work of genius (or a slight madman!!)

Actually listening again as I type this - marvellous stuff.

There are just soo many great moments (and great tracks) so far. smile

Loving the complete changes of pace throughout the mix too. I can see how this took you hours.

I think that Don, you and I should all hook up one afternoon and have a jam!!!!

(and thanks for the big up Don!!!)
