I am trying to learn plenty of technique; start reading sheet music, learn my scales and so on, but I'm also looking for a few fun (easy-ish) bass riffs to play around with. Never really listened out specifically for bass parts before, so I've just gone for the obvious ones like the easier Red Hot Chillis songs. Can anyone recommend some fun tunes/tabs to look out for?

Most Queen songs have got interesting bass lines IMO. John Deacon is a very melodic player, and chances are you'll know most of the songs by ear already.. ! Rage Against Machine quite nice strong bass parts, Beatles and most disco or soul tunes are worth a try.....

I'd try and work them out by ear rather than tab, unless you get stuck. Most free tab's on the interweb are inaccurate anyway..

I find it pretty difficult to decipher them completely by ear at the moment, but after a few years of playing (lead) guitar I can usually spot the mistakes in online tabs if I've got something to start from. Really enjoyed playing around with the bassline to A Message To You Rudi, but I needed to combine the correct bits from about three different online tabs to get it right.

But yeah - any idea are good. I tried to figure out the solo-ie bits from My Generation, but they're a bit beyond me at the moment. Likewise the funkier Chillis and RATM stuff. Although I can sort of almost play a 1/3rd speed version of Higher Ground. Almost. wink

Rush basslines are very fun to play.

Freewill, YYZ and La Villa Strangiato are my favourite to play

The ones I've had fun banging out while learning over the last month were things like "Here comes your man" by the pixies, "That's entertainment" and "Start" by the Jam, "Guns of Brixton" by the clash, "A message to you rudy" by the specials, pretty much all of Joy Division and if you get stuck and want easier lines then you could work your way through U2's "The joshua tree" album. Essentially I chose I load of stuff that was relatively easy to play along with the record which helps with the timing.

Including the fill in the live version? Cool... smile

ETA: Lots of Stranglers stuff has great bass lines - start simple with Peaches.

Rage Against The Machine. Anything really, but Bombtrack is a particular favourite of mine.
