I've been familiar with the Mikado for many years, and love it. I've watched film Topsy Turvy countless times, one of the best films ever made in my opinion, and recently treated myself to a boxed set of the Savoy Operas. I've got as far as Princess Ida so far.

While watching I usually have the Wikipedia page up, and the DVDs include a libretto, which is handy.

I think all the ones I watched so far are good, but I think I will have to listen to each a few times to really appreciate them, as some of the music is not of the instantly likable variety. Also I'm not too keen on soprano voices, though I realise that operas have to have them.

Any other G&S fans here?

EricMc is into his AmDram and musicals!

They certainly have their place, and I've been involved in many productions over the years!

Did loads of shows with Leeds G&S Society over 10+ years

All good fun with a great crowd of like minded thespians!

Produced a couple of local shows for the kids/adults in nearby villages more recently.

'Pirates of Penzance' is probably the best for a mixed group, even real youngsters or old farts can ham it up as a Pirate or Policeman.

If you need a laugh here is a snippet from our village production about 5 years ago. Yes it really is me singing Frederic at 43 years old!

Damn fine singing for an amateur.

From the replies so far it's evident that G&S is very much a participation thing. I hadn't really thought of that aspect of it, but will do so now.
