Hello All,

I was just surfing through one of those site’s yesterday, looking at music CD’s.

Can anyone explain to me the difference between the following CD Formats and the standard format you can buy at more realistic prices, please:

Just as an example:

A ~ PINK FLOYD - Wish You Were Here JAPAN 24K GOLD CD

B ~ PINK FLOYD - Wish You Were Here Japan CD w/BOX-OBI 32DP

And

C ~ PINK FLOYD - The Wall REMASTERED JAPAN MINI LP 2CD

24 K Gold ? Really?
OBI ? The “OBI” signifies something, as there are quite a few with those Ident. letters
And what is a Mini LP ?

To all the muso aficionados out there they may seem stupid questions, but the price difference between the above three examples and the standard CD format would suggest something extraordinary or a limited number being issued.

Many thanks and look forward to your replies.

Sam

Ihave the "Mobile Fidelity" Gold version of "Songs from the Big Chair". The rub being that it was "cut" from the master tape and "mastered" to Digital by Mobile Fidelity. The "Mobile Fidelity" does mean more to me than the "Gold" disc. I'd say that if the "gold" disc is a Mobile Fidelity one then it will be of superior quality whether or not the "Gold" disc makes any difference.

A mini LP is a CD version of something that was originally released as a 12" (12 inch) vinyl LP.

They are also known as LP replicas as they tend to exactly replicate the original packaging of the first vinyl release.

In many cases the packaging is superior to, or at least more elaborate than the majority of vinyl releases. The reason being that many follow-up vinyl releases were inferior to the first vinyl release (or at least lacked some of the extras found in the first release - such as postcards, posters, lyric sheets etc).

Obi, or Obi strip, relates to the small card strip round the "spine" of the CD, normally on Japanese releases and this contains info about the CD in Japanese, and perhaps track listing, catalogue number etc.

Adds a bit of value if it is intact, as only a few countries use these, so there's a novelty factor
