Many people on here play drums? I'm just getting into it, been practising for about 6 weeks now.

Was looking into grades, what sort of things do you need for grade 1 and is it particularly difficult to do?

Been playing drums for around 6 years, been in loads of bands, played loads of gigs, always just taught myslef by listening to loads of different styles of music and practising (not always on drum kits, mostly just tapping on my legs or practice pads).
Sorry i cant help you on your question (i dont even really know what "grades" are lol), just thought id offer an other side to the "academic/ lessons route" into playing drums.

Hello,

Been playing drums for 10 and a bit years now, had lessons all the way through. My teacher hasn't taught me everything I know but it does help. For grade 1 depending weather you do Trinity Guildhall or Rockschool grades. Rockschool is a walk in the park until grade 6 ish and is less respected than T/G. T/G grade 1 will be a couple of pieces one with a backing track and one without, plus ruddiments or ruddiment study.
Happy to answer any more questions.

George.

Hi, I started playing about 18 months and took my Trinity Guildall grade 1, missed grade 2 and did grade 3. I was going to take 4 in Novemebr but a little baby boy came along 5 months ago so its impossible to practice at the moment, will be picking it up again next year although Im still having the lessons. I have a teacher who is a grade 8 and is 74, hes an absolute beauty and is just brilliant. I bought a script book called "Drum techniques of Led Zeppelin" and took it to him yesterday and we had a blast playing "Nobodys fault but mine".
Grade 1 is very easy, single stroke roll, double stroke roll, single paradiddle, one piece to music and I think one piece without music. Theres a site reading where they give you a three bar groove with a 4th bar fill and I think there is a time signature question and a small play along to a piano.
Alot of people will say you dont need to have lessons or take grades which is fine as some people can read music and may be naturals. I always had a good sense of rythm but had no musical back ground, I can now read 99% of drum scripts. Trinity is regarded as the best and Rock School is allegedly a bit easy.
Im 43 and wanted to play drums at 14. My aim is to get to atleast grade 5 and hopefully grade 8. My teacher tells me that a grade every 6 months is not unrealistic and that at grade 5 you can pretty much hold your own.
So in summary, first definatley go for it and secondly take Trinity grades. Good luck, if you need any more info let me know.

No there two different examinining bodies. As said in the last post if your going to do grades Trinity is the way forward.

Another thing that might help is if you go to drum clinics, if your in the right area. I managed to pick up some things from some of the greats from these clinics such as Thomas Lang, Steve Smith and John Blackwell to name a few.

Oh and one last thing, technique, try to make sure it's spot on now before you get really into drumming, i started with poor technique had to change after a few years and it was a nightmare. The mollar technique made famous by one of my teachers is very helpful especially when you start playing faster things and well any speed beat for that matter.

George.

Hi George, I'm pro as a private teacher, session drummer and in a busy covers band. I also teach in several schools.
What about you?

Hi, I'm still a student. I've been playing for 11 years looking at degrees in drums next year, just wondering what a good path was after the degree.

P.S.Sorry about hi-jacking the thread.

If you aren't aware of this forum - http://www.mikedolbear.com/forum/default.asp then have a look. You'll get loads of help on there.
Also The Ultimate Drum Experience week is definately worth attending in the summer - http://ultimatedrumexperience.com/page/2010-ultima... if you're thinking of making a career with your drumming. Rob.
