Why a "milestone"?

... proof that something worthwhile came out of the whole 1977 thing I suppose - other bands of the punk era were busy self-destructing at the time. More than that it's still a bloody good listen today.

Greatly over-rated band in my view with a reputation aided by the early death of Joe Strummer - an early death always being a good career boost. At the time I don't remember them being considered to be anything special and they certainly had a long drawn out demise.

Each to their own, but I think their reputation was long established before Joe's death. Many "Best Album Of All Time" type lists have London Calling hovering around the top and I've lost count of the number of bands that list The Clash as an influence. Yep, I'm a fan!

They were as fake as the Pistols though, so their reputation is in my book somewhat questionable. Thats not to say they didn't produce good music, they certainly did, but they were put together by managment, so in many ways just as credible (or not) as simon cowells acts today.

Personally although i do like their music, i think their contribution has been slightly over egged, not least by lot music journos who look at punk though rose tinted glasses and a lack of understanding.

christ, 30 feckin years...where does it go?

I can remember the album first coming on sale, tbh it wasn't my bag back then and i was very anti-punk and new wave, being a teenage stoner. now at 43 i can appreciate the Clash and this album in particular as truly great.

Strummer's guitar has a majestic sound and is indeed uniqe
R.I.P. Joe
