Mariah Carey, Slade, Wham, Chris Rea, even East17 have achieved timeless songs that will will be rolled out each year for Christmas.
I don't know about you, but it's never Christmas until you start hearing them on the radio, and one of the best feelings is driving home from your last day of work to something festive.

It doesn't happen now, as Simon Cowell has decided he wants a piece of the action and the little gift sales of getting a CD for the niece or whatever.
No one wants to attempt a Christmas song now as they'll be pissing in the wind against months of hype for some manufactured act.

Yes, i'll admit that a lot of the christmas songs before are manufactured in a way, but at least they had a christmas feel about them.
There was always bets going on as to who'd be number one, Cliff Richards would try something, there would be 2-3 acts going in to the end, and a little bit of a race on.

Now it's a foregone conclusion.

What will be played on the holo-digital-internet-radio systems of our kids in 20 years time when they break up for Christmas?

I always live the way that people always get the "ITTTTTTTSSSSS CHRIIIIIIIIISTMASSSSSSS!!" bit in the wrong verse...

Were there ever that many? Really? Taking a quick look back at the Christmas numbers ones the last non-charity one was back in 1990. People are still releasing Christmassy songs, we just have to ignore the top few spots in the charts...

I think the last ones to really have a stab at a traditional (cheesy) one were the Darkness.

From listening to the radio the last couple of nights on the way home from work (usually a CD man so not up to date with current releases whistle) I think Christopher Cross and George Michael both have Christmas Songs out this year... didn't think much of either of them though!
