Solo Guitar - The Greats
Discussion
Of course, there are many great guitar solos contained in a tune or a song. But there are others that are guitar solos in their own right, most of which are just as majestic.
For example:

Any more for any more??

Ry Cooder with Paris, Texas
SRV with Lenny
Finally, and a bit of a cliche, Stanley Myers / John Williams with Cavatina. Famous as the theme from The Deer Hunter. It's certainly where I know it from.

There are many 'greats' but what makes a Guitarist stand head and shoulders above the rest? for me it's not just about the ability to thrash out some earshattering solo. it's about 'Passion'
I agree that the likes of Steve Vai, Satriani, Jan Akkerman, Jimmy Page, Steve Howe, Leslie West, Billy Gibbons and even Clapton are all great at what they do. But what makes a solo 'special'? My interpretation is one that ends all too soon, like Slash's in Sweet Child or Dave Flett's solo in Manfred Mann's Blinded by the Light.
Here are a few, who I think deserve their place next to the likes of Messers Hendrix, Gallagher, Winwood and Co.
Paul Kossoff, technical brilliance coupled with passion

Roy Buchannan, raw blues soloist, a Musicians Muisician

Carolos Santanna, just sublime
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGeXoi-woyo
Robin Trower, for the way he gels with his band with consumate ease
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiA9md4aKSg&fea...
Alvin Lee, because to be able to play like this is just feckin rude, (4.00 is guitar porn)

And no thread would be complete without this genious

Check out the solo at 3:15 onwards . . .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzq17F-b9AU
Quite an unheard of tune by Van Halen but the big thing I like about this is that the solo is nothing like it appears on the original and is completely ad-lib. Shows very well the man's talent.
Not everyone's cup of tea, but for me it's one of my favourite solos for the very reason that he's just done it off the top of his head . . . genius.
