Nothing odd here - I was just reading on the BBC News website a story about Bruce Springsteen and it made me think: I'd read a story that the song "Born in the USA" isn't an patriotic anthem at all, it's a "protest" song.

I know it's been mis-used by other mis-informed American politicians in the past and it's food for thought.

I know there are loads of others - Kiss from a Rose by Seal is, I believe, about being high - And don't get me started on that New Labour song of "Things can only get better", I think we know how all that's working out....

Any more takers?

born in the USA is only anthemic if you don't listen to it except for that line. its about soldiers returning from vietnam, and much of the lyrical content is obvious.

the recent stripped down version captures the meaning far better.

I think U2's One is often taken in the wrong context as well. People see it as this great love song whereas you look at the lyrics and its all about blame and hurt.

Cecilia by Simon and Garfunkel.

Cecilia is the patron saint of music, it's about writer's block.

Also, Mother and Child Reunion. I don't know about the tune, but Paul Simon got the title from a dish at a Chinese restaurant that contained chicken and egg. biggrin

Suzanne Vega - My Name Is Luca

People thought it was a pleasant song but I think it was about child abuse.

Stupidity...

While on a journey with a pal he plays When September Ends by Green Day, a song thought to be about war due to the video being about war. I explain that the song is actually about his father dying.

While being at the destination I learn that my father has just died, on trip home I'm doing my best to keep together and pal says 'I'm gonna play that song again' and puts it on. Dull .

REM's 'The One I Love' always gets me!

The number of people who request it on the radio and ask for it to be dedicated to their boyfriends/girlfriends etc yet fail to hear the (repeated line) 'A simple prop to occupy my time'.
