They've done the odd good track, but they still always strike me as a really cheap knock off of the Doves.

They were round long beforeSub Sub became Doves IIRC.

However, in answer to the OP. No. They are a band who have a huge depth, passion and charm. Seldom Seen Kid is a stunning album and a gateway to new fans to a very impressive back catlogue of albums.

Didn't watch the South Bank Show (ITV is generally skipped).

Seldom Seen Kid is a great album though. One of the best sounding albums of the year too.

Phenomenal band live as well. Saw them earlier this year, and it was one of the few times that I've had the hair on the back of my neck stand up at a live performance.

Guy Garvey's lyrics are peerless. Asleep at the Back is up there in my top 10 albums, and they deserve every bit of critical acclaim they get (IMO).

There first album came out in 1998 iirc, Doves Lost Souls was 1999, so they were slighty before the Doves. However this doesn't change the fact that imo the Doves are a far superior band.

Hmm..I was totally blown away by the Abbey Road/BBC Symphony Orchestra gig/recording shown on TV early this year. Really stunning, i challenge anyone who likes music not to be moved by it.
BUT
I saw the South Bank Show last night and those tts they focused on in the audience singing-with-eyes shut and waving their hands about like god-botherers really made my dick itch and has put me off seeing them live!

You're quite right to have your own opinion.

Even if you're wrong.

yes

Good tunes/melodies with well though-through lyrics (as opposed to just 'shoe-horning in words to fit' as many bands seem to do)

Havent seen the South Bank Show, but i believe they showed snippets from their last gig in Manchester? If so, i was at that gig and whilst it was a superb performance i couldnt get over the crowd. I've never seen so many people wandering around the floor during a concert; going off to buy beer etc. We were sat in the stands, and the two blokes next to us, disapeared for a full hour whilst Elbow were on! Other people around us got up to go out too.

Ignoring the crowd, as it was Elbow we went to see, we thoroughly enjoyed the concert and won't be put off going to future gigs.

That seems to have become the norm over the last few years, I've been to gigs and had people behind me talk the entire way through, even some who have moaned that it's too loud to talk to one another!

I loved their first album (Which is getting on a bit now) but everything I heard from them after that was all very mediocre I thought..

Yeah i think it was the Manc gig they showed clips from. Perhaps it was just the front row but it looked like the front row of a god-bothering baptist church! yuck It was just embarrassing.

The last gig i went to was Ween last year at the Shepherds Bush Empire. They were brilliant but the crowd near us (we were in the stands) looked more like they were watching the band on YouTube, sort of hunched over in their seats. Sad tossersrolleyes

Fantastic band & The Seldom Seen Kid got me in as well. Thought the SBS last night was a bit weird & high brow but then its Melvin Bragg not the Old Grey Whistle Test so what do you expect?

I took my Mum to see the Manchester gig for her 60th birthday. As soon as they came on stage she reverted to being 16 years old and pushed her way to the front. It was the third time I have seen them on this tour, once in Llandudno in March and at V Festival, so I wasn't that fussed but any home gig is going to be great and I wasn't disappointed.

The only gig's I have had problems at with regard to people talking during the performance have been the two Elbow gig's this year. The first one I was forced to watch from the wings as I went with a dwarf so that was understandable. The one in in Manchester saw three young lads push their way through the crowd mid-way through the set and proceed to talk loudly, with their backs to the band. I waited for one song before I politely lent across and asked them to shut the fk up. Before I had finished my request a lynch mob had formed around me to add their thoughts and the three blokes disappeared soon after.

I think the problem is that a lot of people who got tickets to the Seldom Seen Kid tour only knew one song from that one album that they had picked up in Tesco during their weekly shop after they had heard the song on Radio 2. This theory was confirmed when at one gig some wag shouted 'play one we know' after he had talked to his partner for the duration of the gig.

Anyway, Elbow, great band, great depth, Guy Garvey's voice and lyrics are very distinctive and emotive. As previously said, I think Seldom Seen Kid has led to a lot of people seeking out the bands back catalogue, some of which is even better.

P.S - I'm also a big Doves fan but I think they can drag songs out a little too long sometimes.

..You need to add Noel Edmunds to that list surely?

And possibly DLT and Matthew Kelly...
