Hello all

my 8 yo daughter has just started guitar lessons on a 3/4 size guitar. Her teacher has suggested she gets a plectrum. Well, I know nothing about them and I wonder if anyone here can tell me which one/size etc I should get for her? Thanks! S

get down your local guitar shop and ask her to try some...I'd say something pretty thin. Jim Dunlop do a huge range of thicknesses, she needs to try some different ones and see what she is comfortable with

They're only cheap so get one of each size and let her try them. I quite like Dunlop Standard Tortex picks, although for the last 18 months or so I've just used Dunlop Jazz IIIs. They'd probably not be much good to her though as they're a bit of an acquired taste because they're so small.

They do pink ones as well which was the most important attribute to my daughter wink

I use Dunlop yellows if that's any help - thick enough but still with a bit of give.

Jazz III, sharp. Black and regular size for lead only. Red, XL size for general use. Only things I will ever use.

Now.

I can't find my favourite pick any more.

Can't remember the make either.

Triangular on plan, mainly black but with a contrasting colour at the thumb and pick ends. Not nylon (I think) but had a plastic-type-alcantara feel to them (!!). The main thing was that in the middle of the pick, it was a little thinner than either end with about 3 ridges in the thin bit.

Anyone know which pick this is, and where I can get some?

Cheers

Have you tried the ultex version? I'm tempted to try them because I wear the tip of the normal ones down quite quickly. Also they're about to launch a new high grip version of the Jazz III too which might interest you if you keep dropping them like I do!

I'd never seen the Ultex version, I'll seek some out and give them a try.

High grip would be good to try too...I'm not sure what's going on, I've been playing for years, but in the last couple of months my plec usage has gone to hell. I seem to have a really hard time holding onto the things. For my picking technique, I like a fairly relaxed grip, always have done, but lately when playing the plectrum seems to either rotate in my fingers or I'll drop it completely.

It's a bizarre feeling, because my mind is telling me that I'm gripping it firmly, but I'm obviously not.

I'm glad it's not just me. I have exactly the same issues. They are so nice to use that I had forgiven them but if they're introducing more versions it can't be just us with these problems. Good on them for trying to sort it out. smile

Plectrums are so cheap so just buy a few different thickness ones and see what she prefers. I use different ones depending on whether I'm on acoustic, electric, playing lead style stuff or strumming and so on...

I'd go with this, also: If she's going to be strumming mostly, a thin, flexible plectrum is probably better. If she's picking out melodies instead, then a thicker plectrum would be better.

However, personal preference probably trumps that advice.

+1

What all the proper guitarists use. I love the normal small red Jazz III's. Haha wink

I used to use white Sharkfins - the bumps on the bottom give a lovely raspy / harmonic tone.

Planet Waves the main ones for me, medium to hard thickness. But saying that, a plectrum is just a plectrum, so as long as it is standard shape I will use pretty much any type I have at hand. Others in my current plectrum box are Fender, Dunlop and Venom.

I just use whatever I can get hold of at the time. Pretty much any plectrum will do.
