Been to see a few old bands this weekend and I wondered is there any point at which an old band is much different from a tribute band..in each of the ones this weekend there was only one original member of the old band performing, none of the other group members had had any part in writing or recording the original work..much the same as a tribute band..anyone have any thoughts on this...?

depends which bands you're talking about. the one who tour in such a fashion tend to be groups who had a brief moment in the sun back in the 70's and refuse to give up, and generally bands i would avoid both the original and the tribute!

then you have bands like the who, with 2 original members left but feck me, still more than capable of putting out a sound thats 90% of their peak performance.

Seen some cover bands who were great, T- Rextacy, Australian Doors Show.

Some, not so much, From The Jam (don't care if it's 2/3 of one of my favourite groups - was grim) and a Stevie Ray Vaughan tribute which was never going to work, was it?

Now 'Dr Feelgood' are playing locally on Friday. No original members, but some played with Lee Brilleaux for 10 years, so can't be dismissed as a tribute act.

Best days long ago? Living on past glories? TBH never that big in the 1st place? At £12 to see a storming R & B band within staggering distance of my house - I couldn't give a f... thumbup

I think Page & Plant had the right idea. Developed new material as a separate entity but was hapy to throw in some classics at the same time when performing.
