Anyone a fan of this guitar legend?

He must have one of the highest awesomeness to popularity ratios (i.e he is mega awesome but not that popular).

He seems to particularly excel live.

Anyone have any live recordings they can recommend?

Parts of Transcendental Guitar (Phoenix) are live. A bit too Yngwie in places (for me, anyway), and seems intent on being Beethoven on 6 strings. Another case of technique over content IMO, but you can't deny the talent.

Can't stand all the the 'best guitarist' threads, as it's all very subjective, and there's no such thing as a 'best' player, but, entirely in my opinion, if you can get hold of some, have a listen to some Lance Lopez for some 'face melting' blues. Just a recommendation.....

HE popped up at a Scorpions gig last year at the Apollo (Manc) - well he was the opener.

Not really a fan of his (much prefered the Scorps after he left) but I can still appreciate the talent.
It was a strange set which included the campist heavy rock vocalist EVER (me and my mate were pissing ourselves - German, leather, vest and sunglasses are the best of mixes to begin with... biggrin ), but it all culminated in his 12 year niece getting up and singing an intro to some 15 minute epic!!!!

eek

Although....

... during the Scorpions main set he came out again and they did Speedy's Coming and it was bloody, bloody wonderful!!!!

Mad Mickey Schenker (my guitar GOD) was also there and in-spite of his god-awful Dean flying V played his knickers off!

biggrin

Yea the only time I have seen him live is supporting The Scorpions last year

I have to say the Scorps were OK but I could have taken another 2 hours of UJL personally!

You must admit you giggled a bit when the male singer came prancing out for his go!

I'm the other way round really, although I loved his Scorpions stuff I'm much more into their stuff after he left!

Heres a vid I did from the Manc gig (if you're interested)

I can't remember the singer TBH, lol

Schenker is also one of my fave guitarists - they both prob are in my top 5.

Couldn;t make his London or Wales gig last month - although I wasn;t too confident on him putting on a good show after some of the stuff I;ve read about him recently!

I think his arrangement of the Concerto D'Aranjuez is beautiful (however it's supposed to be spelt):

I can definitely see the Yngwie Malmstein comparisons, but Uli Jon Roth is just that little bit toned down which makes it less of a cliche for me.

Good geestarist.................

.......but lyrics like "I am a river, I am a giver, I am a lone tree a long way from home", now come on.

nb. I accept no responsibility for slight inaccuracies in the quote, as I only listened once, and discarded all thoughts to my brains spam box.
