Can someone tell me how it works with repeated songs?
There's an advert for Boots on tv and it starts a Girl Aloud song (Here come the girls) three times until it starts proper. Do they have to pay PRS x3 or is it done via the advertising agency submitting returns?

Just curious.

I beleive there is a time limit for a minimum duration of a copyrighted piece of music before royalties comes into effect. I think its five seconds. Therefore, if the first two clips are less than 5 seconds, royalties are not due.

I only heard this from a Radio show where they kept playing a bit of a song, and someone commented on bumping up the Artists royalties.

They would have a deal done direct for either per usage or a flat fee.

Famously the Stones got an 8 figure sum because Bill Gates wanted 'Start Me Up' for the advert for Windows 95.

Sometimes however, the artist or their management may to a deal which benefits both parties. Remember the M&S adverts in the run up to last Xmas with the Take That song? Remember how many references to Take That were in the wording to the ad?

It is likely that they licenced that for free or a nominal rate under certain conditions to gain for their own publicity.
