Porcupine Tree ... finally getting the Kudos they deserve in mainstream media!!
Having been a fan of these guys (and all of Steve Wilsons projects) for years, it's nice to see the guys getting some recognition.
A real "Diamond in the rough" this lot!

They sound interesting what are they like? Are they similar to any bands? What style are they?
Also is your name "Spiritual Beggar" anything to do with the Stoner Rock band of the same name?
From Sweden, yeah. Another awesome band Also is your name "Spiritual Beggar" anything to do with the Stoner Rock band of the same name?
Porcupine Tree - They have a very unique sound. Hard to say who they sound like because they don't really. But imagine a cross between; Floyd, Radiohead, Muse, Beatles.
Also, if you like Porcupine Tree....check out the band "Abigail's Ghost"!!

Got into them a couple of years ago when the last album was out, through similar style bands like Oceansize, Pink Floyd etc and recommendations on places like Last.fm. I now have the last 4 albums but none of the early stuff. Deadwing is my favourite albums of those four.
I HIGHLY recommend; Voyage 34 & Metanoia. Those two albums are brilliant!
Im a big fan too. Im off to see them in Bristol next month.
If you like the pink floyd prog style then their earlier stuff is better i.e. Up The Downstair, Signify, Insignificance.
Then their 'prog-pop' phase (is there such a thing?) with Lightbulb Sun and Stupid Dream.
Then they went more heavy with In Absentia, Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet.
As a general introduction I'd recommend XM & XMII, recorded for US radio.
They are also pioneers of the DVD-A format releasing a lot of music in 5.1 format - a real revelation if you have a home cinema system.

I was thinking of going to either the Hammersmith or Bristol gig.If you like the pink floyd prog style then their earlier stuff is better i.e. Up The Downstair, Signify, Insignificance.

Hammersmith is closer, but I saw them at Bristol Academy a couple years back when at Uni.
Awesome live performance! One of the few bands who's live performances are better than the album versions a lot of the time!
I am a huge PT fan, have been since around 1999 ish, the song "waiting" was used in a mountain bike video Tricks and Stunts with the two Martins & Hans Rey...
They have continually got heavier and darker with each successive album, which is both positive and negative. When people ask 'what are they like?', it's way too hard to explain... Comparing something like the heavy metal 'Fear of a blank planet' to the completely acid trip lyrics of 'linton samuel dawson' from the first album, via the completely free band improvisation that made up the entire of the Metanoia album makes them impossible to describe. They have been too diverse over the career, progressive perhaps?
I have listened to The Incedent on spotify and am underwhelmed at the moment (although am loving time flies, reminds me of the happier earlier era). Just waiting for pay day to order the £70 special edition of the album as I want the surround sound version. (I Wish they would sell it seperately without the special ed packaging).

Anyone know if somebody from Porcupine Tree was once on the quiz show Fifteen to One?
A long while back obviously 1999/2000-ish possibly, but I was aware of PT due to them being mentioned with regards to Opeth. 'Was watching 15-1 and when they did the very short interview of the 3 finalists I am sure one bloke said he was in a band called Porcupine Tree. Kind of caught me off guard as wasnt expecting it..

I've been a huge fan for about 6 years, I bought In Absentia upon a friends recommendation and was instantly hooked. One of the few bands that I can listen to an entire album without skipping a track. Whilst its not the most complicated music in the world the production is stunning, the albums flow really well and I find it enjoyable to listen to.
It took me a couple of listens to get into The Incident, at first it sounded more like a Steven Wilson mixtape rather than PT. A few people had described it as being more of a "classic" sound when compared with the previous two albums, which is now apparent.
Hoping to see them in Leeds if I don't have to work.

Hooray...a thread for PT!
Been a fan since Signify and seen them live 4 or 5 times now. The new album takes a little getting in to, but worth persevering with.
Can highly recommend seeing them live, very tight and can faithfully reproduce an album live.
Previous posters have given a good resume of theor back catalogue...can I also highly recommend "The Sky Moves Sideways" as one of their most better bits of prog rock loveliness? Thats currently in the car with The Incident.

That was actually the first album of theirs that I bought.A true gem. "Dislocated Day" & "Moonloop Coda" are two of my fav PT tracks.

Many similarities to Rush also. NEP and Gavin from PTree are good buddies too.
Rumour is that after SW finishes doing 5.1 mixes of all the King Crimson albums he is going to start on the Rush back catalogue. Mmmm... Moving Pictures in 5.1 surround... oh god I've just done a little sex wee.B Oeuf said:
I like Idiot Prayer and Even Less, they are an intriguing band, has anyone heard their new album yet?
