I'm sure I'm not the only one who had never even heard of her before she won the mercury - Well from what I've heard so far she is an arrogant, talent-less little wannabe - I'm sure she will do well.

I've never heard of her.

I was looking at the ' previous winners' list - it's funny to see the ones that have prospered, and the ones who haven't.

Watched this last night, I own quite a few of the shortlisted albums (La Roux, Kasabian, Friendly Fires, Bat For Lashes, The Horrors, Glasvegas and Florence & The Machine). I thought Bat For Lashes should win, that Florence didn't deserve to as I think it's a really over rated album but couldn't believe Speech Debelle did win, she's totally unoriginal and just plain crap in my opinion. I liked Miranda Sawyers subtle 'she'll make a better album than this', and The Times last Saturday's opinion that she was 'most likely to...' do a Miss Dynamite, ie her second album flops and she ends up on Hells Kitchen (or some other 'z' list celeb show).

When I heard their name being read out as a nominee, I thought they were talking about the failed 'girl group' from last years' X-factor... laugh

Never heard of her before last night either.
Is she a Radio 1 special or just a London thing?

If she was a Radio 1 special or a London thing her album would have sold enough to chart, which it hasn't. She's just not very good, that's why no one has heard of her.

i think it was a sarcastic congratulations...

The last couple of albums I worked on have sold more than that and they were in Gaelic.

I actually thought last night was a disappointment compared to previous years.
Some very good albums released over the last 12 months that were not in the running.

3,000 records is nothing in the grand scheme of things.

I've never heard of Speech Debacle before last night and can't really see how they came to the conclusion that this is the best of British music.

I've never heard any of her stuff and don't want to either, proper rap was in the 1980's when it was raw and new. The new wave or rap is just mass produced industry drivel.

I thought that Bat For Lashes could be in with a shout, being she was on stage at Glastonbury this year and has gone down rather well with her new album.

I have no idea how the Mercury Prize is judged. I just think it is controversial for the sake of it. People expect it to go to the most obscure or worst acts, so that is why the worst or least known ones win.

Debacle will have limited appeal, so I don't think a win will do much to increase her profile. If you are into rap you would have probably heard of her, if not, then you are probably not going to be swayed into going out and buying it.

Strange choice I thought - although they usually do a good job of picking "winners"
Since 92 the only winners who have really dissapeared without a trace are Talvin Singh (99) and Anthony & The Johnsons (05). Gomez (98) is debatable
All the others have continued, or did continue, to have commercial success.

To be fair, it's unlikely you would be able to see how they came to that conclusion if you'd never heard it anyway.

Having said that, I'm just listening to it now (hadn't heard it before) and it's listenable, but I certainly don't see how it could be considered the best British release of the last 12 months.

I have heard of her and listened to the album.

When the nominations came out I was more than surprised!

If they wanted some of that genre they could of gone for hundreds of others.

This isn't even the best album on the label.

Not a fan of Rap music so I won't be listening to this. This Mercury prize doesn't half throw up some right weird winners though.

The Mercury can be on the money but it also seems to have become the open voice of the almost avant garde judge.

With so many ste awards such as the Brits being vehicles for the larger record label/management teams to use as play dough to shift numbers in mainstream I do enjoy 'genuine' awards but even this is going down the pan.

The closest we used to get was the NME awards when it was called 'The Brats' as a cock a snoot to the Brits.

Bat For Lashes would have deserved a win but if you haven't already give The Invisibles a bit of time, worth a go, a bit like a funk fuelled Bloc Party.

Bloody hell! I've sold more albums than that!

I heard her this morning on BBC World Service - not my cup of tea has to be said. Didn't understand one word she was 'rapping'.

Never heard of her before this thread. Had a look on youtube and it was better than expected. Not saying it should have won anything, but definitely better than that Tinchy guy that's currently on the charts.

I am no connoisseur of rap, but going by those who are and how they rate rapping, her "flow" is quite good. The backing music isn't bad either.

Nothing wrong with celebrating art or music that comes from impoverished or tough backgrounds.

The world would be pretty dull if we only listened to music from nice friendly families.
