How can I say this... Bobby Darin...
Discussion
In the Bobby Darin song 'Minnie The Moocher' one line of the Song lyrics...
... now Minnie and Smokey, they started shagging... they got a free ride in the wagon...
Now, whisk me sideways and chalk my beaver... but is that not a tad strong lyrically for the 60s?!
Is there some alternate meaning for Shagging back then or is he singing in a Jazz Hall stylee about two people knocking partition walls?
Perhaps Shagging is a type of dance... yet why would they be getting a free ride in the wagon?

Saw him in the later 80's, fantastic performer even though he must have been in his 80's
Cab Calloway was the original performer. Darrin had a number of hits with covers:
Beyond the Sea - originally La Mer by Charles Trenet
Mac the Knife - originally sung by Lotte Lenya in "The Threepenny Opera" (in German) and in the early 50s by Louis Armstrong.

Woooahh there soldier... if someone shouts out Shagging on the work Stereo that is under my control in an office of 20people... some explanatory measures need to be implemented. And being barely born a couple of decades ago let alone 40+ years, I think I am fairly within my 'common knowledge' liberties to question the term!

I'm with you on this one, I only knew about it because I'm old enough to remember the 1989 film above, and young enough to have spent hours sniggering about it in the playground.Thank goodness pipe smoking has gone out of fashion. My grandad always fancied a rough-cut shag.
What do carpet layers say now?
And I see this question on the use of English has ended up in the music forum - I am getting slightly tired of inappropriate thread moves.

Oh Eric. Haven't you finished that bone yet ? Sometimes you are just tiring with your griping. In its title it says "Bobby Darin" - a well known popular singer.
It is about the detail of a song lyric, ultimately regarding a period dance.
How is it inappropriate in the music forum ? Where does it say anything about the use of English language ?
In here it gets a sensible response, the OP gets a set of full and detailed answers and then the kids join in with sea-bird elements etc trying to be funny (Though the Australian one is very good ).
