I've just seen MSN's list of overrated artists. It includes John Lennon (what was that band he used to have? sure they never amounted to anything?), The Stone Roses (what birth of indie?), Eric Clapton (apparently isn't god despite the graffiti), Greenday (debatable) and The Verve (again debatable, but as a child of the '90s...)

You have to wonder who the guy actually does like? Is it all oh-so arty Islington bands with pretentous names and stripey T-shirts, or are we to assume he's more of an Atomic Kitten man?

Probably going to anoy some people here but Rage Against the Machine have my vote for one of the most overated bands. It's ridiculous for what they are.

I'm going to be brave and say that I actually agree with him here. I'm not suggesting he wasn't very talented and played a significant part in popularising a certain style of music, but this is talking about being overrated, not about being good; he's often viewed as some kind of musical deity.

He was good, but not that good.

Fair point, but surely the die-hard fans of any artist will say that? I think those which are truly overrated are the bands which aren't even good on their own, but simply carried by a fad.

Two that I'd nominate are The Streets (musically and poetically vacuous, but they appeal to the upturned-collar Fred Perry wearers of this world) and The Arctic Monkeys (a decent enough indie band, but only propelled to stardom by the inverted snobbery of southern music journos who like the gritty reet-northern thing).

Interesting point - a very tight band but IMHO only made outstanding by Tom Morello. For me that means an entry in some top guitarist list but given the hype they receive as a band I'd have to agree - overated...

How about a link to the list so I can join in the self-righteous complaining?

How are the Stone Roses the birth of indie? There were loads of indie bands before them.

I thought "Original Pirate Material" was superb, but everything since was tosh.

No.

Okay, go on then... http://entertainment.uk.msn.com/music/galleries/ga...

Now you can do your own self righteous complaining and play nicely with the group.

Funny, I was reading a guitar forum the other day and the consensus there was that he's actually underrated as a guitarist. People focus on the celebrity and don't realise how good a rhythm guitarist he was.

With reference to the original post, I agree with Stone Roses (only did one good album, which, incidentally, i love), Eric Clapton (boring watered down MOR blues) and The Verve (banal to say the least). John Lennon not so sure about - can you really consider him outside of the Beatles?) I think Green Day deserve the rating they have - lets be honest they are not viewed as top of the rock tree by any means, so the rating seems fair.

They weren't even there at the birth of Madchester. While the Mondays and New Order were partying at the Hacienda, the Stone Roses were miserable goths. Arrivistes.

Well, i suppose it is subjective.

But Lennon, Clapton and Jack White surprises me.

Also the lack of U2 and coldplay surprises me.

He also states Brian Adams as one of the most underated artists...

Entirely unconvinced by that comment. Clapton was playing 1920's blues standards on electric guitar before anyone in this country really understood what "delta blues" was all about. He has always had an excellent grasp of the music & feel of the likes of Robert Johnson / Son House / Leadbelly / Lightning Hopkins etc, and - for a white bloke from Surrey - plays electric Chicago blues equal of Muddy Waters / Freddy King / Albert King / Buddy Guy.

OK, his mainstream stuff is lightweight. But he's a bluesman first and foremost:
