Just hears on our news "wires" service that Les Paul, the guitar Legend, has died of Pneumonia, aged 94, in New York state. End of an era for all guitar fans everywhere. frown

Very sad. Imagine how different music would be without the iconic LP guitar. I'll have to make sure I play mine this evening. RIP.

Sad news indeed - must be one of the best known names in music. Pioneered multi track recording as well if I'm not mistaken....

Would love to know how much commission he's made from Gibson over the years!

RIP LP

Wonder if he'll come back as a re-issue.

Still need to call you GP.

Went to the Irridium Club in New York last month to see him play but he cancelled through ill health.

Wish I hadn't sold my standard now.

RIP Les.

RIP frown

As well as the solid bodied guitar he also pioneered multi-track recording and electronic effects, for which he is not so well known but which is ultimately probably of more importance. He commisioned the 1st 8 track recorder ever.

Another legend from the beginnings of "popular" music slips away - not too many left now.

And in the same week in which we remembered the centenary of Leo Fender's birth.

A program on Les Paul is on BBC4 at 10pm tonight for anyone who is interested.

I thought it was a great program. More about his life and inventing multitrack recording than the guitar. I didn't realise he had influenced and was influenced by so many people. It was great to see he was still playing jazz at 90 and still enjoying it too.

I don't think it is sad to be honest. He had a great long life and died at an over expected age.
I think people should smile for him and not be sad. Have a drink for him and be happy.

I thought it was a pretty good program - I knew he was an accomplished guitarist but never realised just how good
