A good friend of mine pointed me in the direction of John Mayer (not sure how well received he is on here) but I have started to really get into his bluesy music.

Gravity is the track that got my attention, specifically this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZYF4fnAs3c where he demonstrates some unbelievable guitar technique and phrasing.

Unfortunately, the Album version is nowhere near as long or as good as this and it led me to ask the question as per the topic title about any other records that ar emuch better live than they are on the studio album version?

I think live dance music can massive trascend the recordings. I'm not a huge dance fan (as you can probably tell by the examples given) but We Come One by Faithless at Glasto 2002 and Moby's set were two performances I'll always remember, despite not being that fussed about the recorded versions.

+1 Prodigy Leeds Festival in about 2001 was the same for me.

Also most songs by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are better live.

almost anything IMHO.

But particularly anything guitar based that was recorded in the 80's.

It's so nice to be able to hear the bass etc.

Metallica, Pantera et al -- you know who you are

I think the vesion of Thankyou Led Zeppelin did for their BBC sessions was better than the Album version, it had a better guitar solo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jc-EdW1amwg&fea...

Calling Card - Rory Gallagher

Or more specifically Calling Card from the live album, the BBC Sessions.

Anything by The Specials is fantastic live, pure energy that cannot be re created on a disc.

That double album is always in my car. It's one of my Desert Island Discs.

Good call. My vote goes to Squonk by Genesis on Seconds Out. Much stronger than the studio version. One of my favorite live tracks!

Still In Love With You: Thin Lizzy

John Sykes solo and the subsequent dual riffing with Scott Gorham in "Life / Live" is spine tingling.

Dazed & Confused: Led Zep

Good version on LZ1, 26 minutes of guitar frenzy on Song Remains The Same.

Have You Ever Loved a Woman: Derek & the Dominoes

Studio version is ok. The Live At The Fillmore version tables Clapton's pain at vol=11. Hair-on-end stuff.

Texas Flood: SRV

Any live version is better than the studio one!

Let there be Rock, AC/DC.

2112, Rush.

Highway Star, Deep Purple; in fact the whole Made in Japan album is better than the studio versions.

Agree with mrmaggit, anything by Deep Purple MkII lineup is better live than in the studio

2112 definitely. Much more nuts live.
