And yes, that is the same Melvyn Hiscock that writes for some of the aircraft magazines!
A quick Google search will get you loads of advice on design, parts, pickups, electrics, finishing etc.
Don't ask me though, I'm just a tinkerer! Here are a couple of photos of one I put together two years ago.
The three toggle switches are to:
1 - add the bridge and neck pickups together to the mix (for two extra sounds you can't usually get on a Strat)
2 - add the extra bridge pickup to the existing mix, in series with the others
3 - change the phase of the extra pickup.
I sold it on eBay and the buyer later told me he'd changed the body, neck, scratchplate and pickups ... but he did keep the wiring.
