What's the PH verdict?

I think he is (was) ace. My wife thinks he sounds like a pissed-up pub singer.

Who's right?

Heard Walk the Line for the first time in ages this morning, and was reminded of how good he can be. He's not for everyone though, I couldn't stand him for years!

Amazing.

If you're familiar with the old stuff only then have a listen to the american series produced by Rick Rubin.

American IV is one of my favourite albums ever.

His cover of Personal Jesus is brilliant. So is Hurt (Trent Rezner lyrics).

He shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die.

The live albums in Folsum and St.Quentin prisons are great, especially when he starts have a pop at the wardens and whips up the inmates – you can just imagine the Governor thinking that it may not have been such a good idea allowing his concert in the first place.

The cover of the Beatles “In my life” is brilliant also.

Saw him live a Glastonbury in 1994, it was a revelation. I admit to liking a bit of both kinds of music (country and western) anyway, but he was just a great performer. The crowd were probably only there waiting for the evening line up - late teenagers and early 20something mostly - but he had the complete attention within a couple of songs. He kept talking about a "special guest" coming on later on ... it was June coming on stage for "Jackson", I think half the crowd were expecting some kind of indie / currently hot / guitarry / long hair type!

His covers show just how good a performer he is - Hurt has already been mentioned, he completely makes that song his own, as he does with his cover of U2's One - the U2 version doesn't have much of an impact, his cover puts meaning and emotion into it in a way Bono couldn't do.

I'd recommend reading his autobiography too, he comes across as a genuinely interesting person.

Very much a favourite of mine.

American IV has a sound to it that is absolutely how I think of Johnny Cash.

I am sure I can here the machine cry when I listen to Hurt.

Hurt is one of the most powerful songs i've ever heard - genuinely moves me to tears if i'm listening to it properly (in a room on my own, high quality stereo turned up nice and loud...amazing)...

I'd agree with that. The fact he was dying when he recorded it just makes it hit home all the more. In fact I can't even listen to the song as it will make me depressed, so as stunning as it is I always skip it

I hurt myself today,
to see if I still feel.
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real.

The needle tears a hole,
the old familiar sting.
Try to kill it all away,
but I remember everything.

What have I become?
My sweetest friend.
Everyone I know,
goes away in the end.
And you could have it all,
my empire of dirt.

I will let you down.
I will make you hurt.

It's one of my most-played on the ipod and I know the lyrics pretty darn well.

What a song.

What a song.
Although they were penned on a very personal level by Trent Reznor about his own heroin addiction they nonetheless seem to have a poignancy to Cash at the time
