Albums everybody needs to hear...
Discussion
In my quest to become a more active PHer I thought I'd take the plunge and start my first ever topic. Basically looking for recommendations of albums that everybody should hear at least once but never had a big enough platform to reach the mainstream consciousness. My starter for ten:
Hot Snakes - Suicide Invoice
Just a half hour of driving riffs, thumping drums and the genius of John Reis. There's nothing pretentious about it, it's angular but not unwelcoming, punk but not cliched, indie but never bland. Just the feeling of how focused it is, like all the band members careers had been building to it. Brilliant.
Now your turn...

never really got the clawfinger thing.the rap stuff from some swedish crowd never seemed legit wheras the first 2 albums from downset are amongst the most influential music on my guitar playing.i was just about to put up my suggestion when reading your post.......do we speak a dead language by downset. if u are a clawfinger fan buy this or their self titled first album(featuring "anger", you might recall??).
nearly forgot......if u are a bit of a metal fan you also need to get onto a band called the bled.their first album in particular is fantastic. very punchy-staccato ala clawfinger/downset/hatebreed/early helmet. actually there`s another album everyone should hear.......meantime by helmet.check the year out, it was that far ahead of its time.page hamilton is a genious. final metal reccomend....around the fur by deftones.i learned this album note for note the first week of release.epic

That is indeed an excellent album, remember seeing them in Brum when they were touring it, sadly they were supporting alexisonfire which put a bit of a downer on the night. Anyway if you like that try Norma Jean's first album (but nothing after the first album, went a bit gash after that).tuscaneer said:

Vaguely familiar yes.... Will pick a copy up on my next Amazon order methinks! These are by no means my all time fave albums (well, some are) but for some reason or another, i feel they are genre defining or moment in time defining (for me anyway).

Exile has one great track, the rest are "meh" IMO. Good call on the other two. Alabama 3 - Exile on Coldharbour Lane
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes
Fields of the Nephilim - The Nephilim

Trace, if you and Pete haven't listened to them, you might want to consider -
The God Machine - Scenes from the Second Storey
Machines of Loving Grace - Machines of Loving Grace
Floodgate - Penalty
(if I've got your tastes right)
For those from the Grunge era, you might like the acclaimed: Screaming Trees - Dust, or Mudhoney - Piece of Cake
If you found Radiohead light hearted: Redjetson - New General Catalogue
