Greenday: sold out?
Discussion
Twenty One Guns just came on the radio at work and it took me a second to realise what it was. There's no doubt the Greenday sound has changed dramatically since the days of Dookie, but does that mean they've sold out? It's almost a cliche to label bands as 'too commercial' and they are now 15 years older than they were when the classic albums came out, perhaps they just have just matured? That's not to suggest they've become old and boring, just that different things must matter to you if you're the best part of 40. Perhpas it'd be more contrived if they still tried to sound 20.
I blame Dookie for Greenday "selling out" - lets face it it brought them to mass attention, the fact that they then followed it up with dross like American Idiot is just the way the music industry seems to work.
You can't expect them to keep putting out things like the older stuff, when they know American Idiot is going to be so much more succesful, and more to the point - the label they are signed to know this is gonna be more succesful, and hence this is what they want to them to record.
Saying all of this though - I can't stand American Idiot - really dislike the album, but the new one i'm quite enjoying.
