If it has to be an oldie, I vote for:

Led Zep
Prince

I can't think of any younger artists that could do a stonking 2 hour set with decent live material, as Lez Ferdinand underlined with a truly awful performance of 3rd rate art-house rubbish.

Please god, not Led zep... the whole site will be asleep.

I think next year is meant to be a celebration of the 40th year and I am sure I read that Eavis wants bands that spread the lifetime of the festival etc. So could be anyone but u2 would be a good shout, maybe the stones and someone modern, based on what / who is about next year.

It doesnt really matter who headlines as thats no really the point.

The Rolling Stones!

Although Glastonbury is a pretty special festival every year anyway so I cannot even begin to imagine what they are planning for the 40th anniversary.

It's going to be a band from every year since 1970 isn't it?

Eavis has stated his intention to get U2 there next year but then he does also seem to display a tenuous grip on reality at times, bless him.

Radiohead I'd have thought are big favourites as well.

I mentioned the stones because before Glastonbury changed to what it is now they were always rumoured to the the headline band, there would be an irony there. For what its worth if they came on an did a greatest hits set, it would be cool. I havent been since 1992 but next year if the line up is right I could may think about it!

I think the way you have to get tickets is stupid, and its way too expensive. Last time I went I think it was 45 quid for the weekend and I got ticket at the local record shop, they were sold from raffle ticket type books! Happy days!!!

Agree about u2, and Radiohead are just to avant garde now - will be interesting to see how they go at Reading.

Useless fact, the band that still hold the record for playing to the biggest ever audience is the Levellers in 93! All a bit mad really!

It's changed massively, even from '97 though.

As for the cost this year, Tom Jones on his own is way over £100 a ticket, the Blur Hyde Park tickets are £50 each and any single big act from the rest of the 500 or so that play would make up the £25 slack so on the basis that you see 4-5 big acts a day for three full days plus possible bonus acts now on the Thursday I think its pretty good value all in all.

but one genre (and i'm bound to say this of course) almost completely ignored at glasto (in terms of headlining bands) is hard rock - why not guns and roses? reunion????????????!!!!!!!!!!
Glastonbury has never been about metal, thank god! Apart from being nothing to do with the history of the festival it would also be st. So hopefully he wouldnt even consider that!!!

Agree with Faithless mind you!

How do they know?

Moby in 2000 I'd say there were more than 100K at and its the biggest crowd at Glasto I've ever seen. The entire other stage field and people stood on the railway 5 deep watching it.

As many people came through the fence as had tickets.

There were 300K people on site, it was utter madness.

The Manics, Fleetwood and Roger Waters have played relatively recently at Glasto so not Floyd but whilst Wright remains of the unliving thats not going to change anytime soon.

I don't think a rock act would neccessarily set Glasto alight. Some of the best performances I've seen there have been from dance acts oddly enough. Faithless, The Chems, Orbital and Underworld have all played absolute blinders in recent years.

U2 have just kicked off a year long world tour, so Glastonbury next year would be a good finale.

Muse, Faithless and (not that’s it's ever going to happen) Stereophonics would be my picks.

U2 are ok, but a bit too showbiz (I know what I mean...) The stones are beyond repair now, Jagger's live voice has had it, and the band are not dynamic enough now. PS: I am/was a huge stones fan (seen them a number of times down the years) Radiohead with a classic set would rock!. Muse are feckin awful radiohead meets U2 clones.

I would love to see the reformed Stone Roses do it; I think Ian Brown still has his mojo intact. The sad thing is that they were going to do it, but due to, err... mishaps they had to give it a miss, which enabled Pulp to step into the space, and do one of the best sets glasto has seen. Radiohead were pencilled in to do it last year, but ducked out which is why Jay-Z was booked instead. I think Prince would utterly rock the place if he was on song and really up for it.

Brown and Squires have both said there is no chance of them working together again in the near future.

As much as I'd love to see The Stone Roses it just isn't going to happen alas.
