When I was born, we didnt have numbers, we just had good old fashion music, most of which is still played to this day.
I might add, played by normal people on medioca incomes. Same era when the stars of the football world went home by bus with the crowd after a match.

This topic surfaces at least twice a year.
And my reply is always - which charts are you looking at?
For many, many years, there were more than one set of charts published in the UK.
There was a Melody Maker chart, an NME chart and the "official" British Market Research Bureau chart - which was the one the BBC used.
I always go with the BMRB chart as it was the one most people were aware of - mainly through Top of the Pops.
The BMRB lost the contract with the Beeb in 1983 and since then it has been run by a number of different market research/polling agencies.
For the record, my No. 1 record is "Who's Sorry Now?" by Connie FRancis.
My mother said it was always a very appropriate song.
