MP3s and tone

Can encoding MP3s mess up the tone of the original recording? The reason i ask is that i was learning a song on guitar from an MP3 file that sounded like it was in Ab, however i was told that the song was actually in G. Went back to the MP3 recording and its clearly in Ab.

Could the encoding of the MP3 have made that change?
