If you can hammer-on (?), then 'Thunderstruck' is pretty cool to hear.

It's also well worth hearing yourself play the first riff of 'Crushing Day' - Joe Satriani.

Led Zep is an encyclopaedia of riffology: heartbreaker / bring it on home / ramble on / nobody's fault but mine / moby dick etc etc etc

Black Sabbath: paranoid / snowblind / rat salad / warpigs / black sabbath (play that one as loud as humanly possible; fooking majestic)

Other of note? "Who Knows" by Hendrix & The Band of Gypsies, "More Than a Feeling" by Boston, "Come As You Are" by Nirvana, "Money" by the Floyd, "Break on Through" by The Doors, most things by Free, Smoke On The Water I suppose for ubiquity.

If you're willing to faff around with altered tunings, Soundgarden's stuff is (IMO) pretty cool! Try Superunknown / Limo Wreck / Spoonman / Overfloater / Fresh Tendrils

You're preachin to the masses here. Take a look at "In My Time of Dying". It's quite a slow, bluesy riff but it's damn good.

The Who: Won't Get Fooled Again does it every time

Fleetwood Mac: The Chain. I know the bass solo/F1 music dominates all but the guitar kicks in as well and it sounds ace, but until March 29th there's still the sound of an old F1 car blasting past missing.

These are always good riffs to demonstrate to firends -

Ozzy - Crazy Train
Megadeth - Holy Wars
Megadeth - In My Darkest Hour
Iron Maiden - Hallowed be thy name or Phantom of the Opera
Sabbath = Heaven and Hell
Dio - Straight through the heart
Prong - third from the sun
Whitesnake - Crying in the Rain
Slayer - South of Heaven or Dead Skin mask

Apart from most of the Zep catalogue, these are the ones I probably do the most often:

Walk this way - Aerosmith
Sunshine of your love - Cream
Ziggy stardust - Bowie
Couldn't I just tell you - Todd Rundgren
Money for nothing - Dire Straits
Cocaine - JJ Cale

Give some a go. You might be suprised at how 'simple' some of the all time classic riffs are. In many cases, the simpler the better. Look at Smoke on the Water for example.

Message in a Bottle is a right swine - not technically difficult but a real stretch!

The Intro riff for Sweet Child Of Mine is all about pick control not fretboard work which is what makes it tricky for many new or rusty players IMO.

There's an Aztec Camera song called Stray which, whilst completely different in style, is also all about pick control and believe me it's really easy to make a right mess of what should be a simple song as I found out on Saturday night!

So much focus is paid to the fret hand that many people forget the pick hand and yet the pick hand is at least as important if not more important - many technical aspects such as sweep picking, finger picking, tapping etc are far more reliant on the control of the pick hand...

Cheers

All of Led Zep II and Appetite For Destruction and you're good. Maybe chuck in some ACDC for good measure music

All good stuff so far but we're talking about classic riffs which are fun to play and there's no Rolling Stones or Kinks stuff yet?????

Start with Satisfaction, 19th Nervous Breakdown, Paint it Black, All Day and All of The Night, You Really Got Me, Waterloo Sunset, and Lola then take the bottom string off, tune to open G[1] and crank out Brown Sugar, Honky Tonk Women, Start Me Up, Tumbling Dice etc :-)

[1] Actually once you've done this you can't help playing classic 'Stones riffs, everything you do sounds like Keef - Top Fun and every guitarist should try it at some point!
