"Greatest".

Most technical or most natural?

Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, John McCloughlin, Jeff Beck, Django Reinhart, Alan Holdsworth........

I'm not one who thinks that faster is necessarily better, so....

Malcolm Young - The best right hand in the world of guitar.

Prince - Like Slash but with taste.

Jonny Ramone - 3 chord Genius.

Jonny Thunders - The King of Sleeze guitar.

Andy McCoy - A Finnish Keef Richards/Izzy Stradlin chimera.

Ginger - He's never dull and his songwriting is eclectic to say the least. Now he's sober he can actually shred like a mofo.

Warner E. Hodges - Jason & the Scorchers chikin pickin' solo machine

Rick Nielson - The geekiest geek ever to be in a rock band. And he had a guitar with 5 necks.

There are many many more but I can't think at the moment.

There's loads of modern very original and creative guys that are often forgotten, as they're not 'shredders' like
Tom Morello - Rage Against the Machine
Graham Coxon - Blur
John Frusciante - Chili Peppers
Jack White - White Stripes

others I'm sure..

Roy Buchanan
Danny Gatton
Jerry Donohue
Rory Gallagher
Robert Fripp
Leo Kottke
Roy Nicholls
Vince Gill
Les Paul
Carl Perkins
Dave Edmunds

I really do prefer the sound of a well played Fender but admire clean players, swapped my Tele for a Shergold Masquarader in 1976 and still have it( brilliant guitar ).

+1 for all of those

I'm a Fender man through and through

I think Tom Verlaine is always worth a listen too -- but then I'm biased as I have a Jazzmaster

Eric Johnson - Cliffs Of Dover is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard.
Steve Vai - just incredible
John Petrucci - great technique, but also tuneful
Prince - a genius
David Gilmour - best sound out of a Strat ever? Enormous volume being used, but still with great control

Greatest huh? Rather different to "favourite".

Anyway, I believe Paul Gilbert is currently earning huge respect from his peers, so is probably in with a shout, but my vote goes to this guy:
