Thinking mainly of 'chart' music for the masses stuff, rather than more specialist markets where this is still lots of talent and quality, but modern music seems to be utterly bland, samey, over-produced tripe. Nothing exciting, no interesting lyrics, no catchy tunes, no decent riffs, even the videos are all boring and similar. Back in the not very distantt past, whilst there has always been 'crap' in the charts, songs were generally, well, just better in every way.

Point in case, some utter tripe by a black female 'artist' that's in the charts at the mo. In the video, she's doing some dancing training (I fink), and sits in a bar a bit, then takes off her coat and walks down the street (in Vegas) in a spangly leotard-thing. Well, I've seen this video and heard the song (or parts thereof) a lot recently, and it was on twice on TMF in the 45 minutes I spent in the gym today, however - nothing stands out at all. I can't tell you who sang it or what it's called, and frankly, if I heard it right now I wouldn't connect it with the video and warbling I've seen on the TV. It has no distinguishing features from all the rest of the crap, no 'landmarks' so to speak, that would help me recognise it.

In the past, I'd recognise even the songs I didn't like at all, as they at least had some unique points, so it's not about whether I 'like' it or not....

So what's it all about? Has all the good, interesting things been done already? There are, after all, only a finite number of notes, instruments and words. Or are the music buying public just more easily pleased?

Or maybe I'm just getting old........... hehe

I think you answer your own question, OP.

You say that mass market music is garbage. Well that's because it's made for the mass market and the population therein.

Dull music for dull people. No different in any market.

Real music ended 1910 if you are going to get pedantic. wink

After all modern music is poor quality, quick and easy music. Nothing really complex. I mean Beatles only made very basic music, with OK lyrics. Just what the people wanted at the time. Much like what people want now is what makes popular music.

Not necessarily, I am 19 and I find a lot of modern music to be uninspired and dull.

There wasn't a single piece of music released in 2008 which I liked.

But mass market music wasn't quite as much garbage just a few years ago! Were the dull people back then less dull?

There's loads of good music out there - you're clearly listening no further than Radio 1.

Having said that, what in the name of God is the deal with the idiotic speeded up synthesised voices warbling like they are on helium..?

Me and a few mates discussed this recently and came to the conclusion that the music we listened to in our youth seeemed so good due to the memories associated with each track and not its quality!

Read first post from start to finish! I've already stated that I'm well aware of good music still being made, but the stuff in the 'popular' charts is far worse than it used to be!

OllieC and parakitathingy - take note! wink

Oh, and I have never listened to Radio 1 since Tommy Vance stopped doing the late night Rock show!!

As you were.

The sort usually accompanied by a farmers market 'MC' is even worse than the warbly stuff.
