I'm recording some piano in Prague, and they tune to A:441. What it is playing to is tuned A:440. Can you accurately change pitch of stuff in pro tools - or will it be just a case of doing it by ear? (or re-tuning the entire piano!)

TIA

Yes - I record my orchestral stuff in Prague all the time. (Cheapskate)
TBH the tuning difference is so slight it has not been an issue for me - even with pop style backing tracks in A440, but YMMV.

If its sounding uncomfortable to you, you'll need the plugin X-Form which IMO is the best pitch algorithm on the market - bar non.
PT8 does have built in on-the-fly elastic pitch - but X-Form is still the way to go!

Have fun smile

Cheers.

Do you use Barrandov? (Smecky)

It is piss cheap isn't it. I'm getting 40 string players for 8 hours in Prague for the price of a chip buttie in London.

laugh Yeah Smecky. Winter is the best time to record there too - I was there last July and there's no friggin aircon in there whatsoever!
Jan might open the window if you ask nicely!

It is amazing for the money. The only problem i've had is that sometimes the brass players can be a bit wimpy/lazy soundng compared to over here - you need to kick their arses a bit smile

Anyway make the most of it; the owners have just sold the place to turn it into a stripclub. I mean, there just arent enough of those in Prague are there? rolleyes

I as almost off to Prague last year to work on piece with a studio owner.
It was cheaper to fly us both to Prague, get accommodation, hire a studio and full string section than it was to work in his own place in Glasgow.

An untimely accident delayed that plan though.

As for PT pitch shifting. X-Form is good but try it on a small section first and play around with the settings.
The artifacts can occasionally be too noticable for my taste, especially on sustain tails. Usually comes across as a shift in timbre.

Have you asked if they will play to 440? I know this has been an issue with Prague in the past but a couple of people have been successful in getting them to adapt.

How did this turn out?
Did you manage to get the orchestra to tune to 440?

Now going on 9th Feb (My pianist was busy this month)

We are mixing with Steve Price at Angel and he's suggested that we varispeed the PT backing tracks in Prague, so that it's all in tune when we come to mix. Seems like a plan (I don't think they have X Form at Angel). For what it's worth, I'll post an example on this thread on my return.

Steve

Decca Tree, spots and ambients! Looks interesting.
Think I may have to start encouraging that postponed project again.

The beer photo has no influence over me.
Honest.

They record stuff really well there, but the sound in the control room is pretty duff (Tannoys), so you have to trust that it will sound good then take it elsewhere to mix (I used Steve Price at Angel).
