I have an old valve amp which has an on off switch but no light.
I have been prone to leaving this on and want to ad a light to tell me it is on.
Is this simple? The mains socket combines with a fuse holder which has out pins either side of the fuse.

Can you not see the valves glowing when it's switched on?
If you really need an indicator, just use an led and a really big value resistor, on the inside of the power switch.

The valves are hidden from the front. I was wanting a simple lamp to add to the front panel

Well I'd say the LED is the easiest way.
If you know what the heater voltage is you could take the supply from there, or the switched mains voltage. Just make sure you use a series resistor that has a big enough resistance to keep the current down to the 10mA or so you need to illuminate the LED. You could of course use a pigmy bulb, if you need a more "period" look, and then you don't need the resistor.

Another intermediate solution would be a micro neon lamp like you get in power distribution blocks. The things on a trailing lead with four or so 13A power outlets. Again with that, you probably don't need a resistor, but it depends what voltage the neon lamp is rated at. The neon has the benefit of being similar size to the LED, but easier to use because of the lack of a need for a series resistor.

Here's what you need. No resistors, just a small hole and a couple of wires to the power switch. All for the princely sum of 49p!

I googled neon power indicator, and that was the top link.
HTH

ETA;
That one has got a chrome surround. It's perhaps smaller than you would like, but if you look closely there is a chrome surround next to the nut!
